I shared this, a loooong time ago. I suppose there are now enough new readers for it...
In high school, I took Latin to meet my language requirement. While most students stayed only two years and then took another language, I was one of the crazies who took it further. There were only three students in the class. It's by far my smallest class ever, and no one could hide anything...
We were about to begin translating the legend of King Midas, and the teacher asked what Midas was famous for. I leaned over to the guy next to me and whispered, "Mufflers." Huge mistake.
He burst out laughing, then I burst out, too. I'm suspecting some time-distortion in my embarrassment with the episode, but it seemed like we kept starting and stopping our laughter for maybe 3-4 minutes, with the teacher and the other student staring at us. We'd apologize, quiet down, then one of us would let out the tiniest snort and we'd both start laughing again.
I think we wound the episode down, both silently convulsing, struggling not to let out any sound, lest we start it all up again. It's curious, but the teacher never asked what was so funny. Maybe this tiny group that showed real interest in her subject needed more nurturing, so she cut us a break. Still, I cringe to remember it...
