witchcraft is fiction

uh, no, it isn't. JKR studied incantations.

"J.K. Rowling finally admitted that she wrote the series on behalf of the Wiccan religion. In years past, many Christian groups were considered obnoxious for advocating that the books be banned from schools due to their potential for polluting children’s brains with belief in witchcraft, but apparently they were not as crazy as originally thought."

Yeah, I know what you mean, but that is apples and oranges different from my original topic which is like Christians being more purist about their media consumption...

like Harry Potter might be the best example, some Christians won’t let their children read it because it contains witchcraft, even though witchcraft is fiction
Witchcraft is definitely more real than we think it is...

If I have to be honest, I'd like to travel back to the 50s and grow up there for a couple of years. I think it would be more interesting to see what would've happen with segregation since I'm mixed.
I did grow up in the 50s, in the New York City Borough of Queens, in the Sunnyside neighborhood, and yes.  Thing were much safer then.

To get a general idea about the time, you might check out this website:

What Happened in the 1950s featuring News, Popular Culture, Prices and Technology (thepeoplehistory.com)

Well, what I was trying to say is that any worldview would limit their media to what their worldview dictates. For some, that is "anything goes", for others, it is more "filtered".

But then how does reading the terrible stuff in the Bible help you grow when you avoid the morally dubious stuff in pop culture?
Ah I can answer that! Well I can try anyway

In the media, there's LOTS of details about ...stuff. I've listened to a lot of songs that very explicity (hence the E tag) talk about sex and drugs that sort of thing. In the Bible, they mention it, but they don't add lots of details. I will say that there are some places (*cough* Song of Songs *cough cough*) that seem kinda weird..but not really inapporiate. So it's not bad to read it in the Bible. When they talk about that dude raping his sister, they tell it straightforard--"What's-his-name raped Tamar." there ya go. no juicy scene or anything like that.

they talk about people killing others and using God's name in vain but don't go into gory details or or use the bad words. Songs and movies in the media don't shy away from those things!

The thing about non-Christian media is that it doesn't point to God in any way (generally speaking) Yeah some stuff in the Bible can be gross or odd but it's God's word. He wrote it (through others) and in the end, it works together to glorify him. Stories of war only point out God's victory and how awesome he is! (like awe-inspring)

I hope that helps...maybe some adults can explain it better than me.

he could ride a bike through his neighborhood, or walk to the candy store.
you guys can't do that anymore?

girl I walk down the highway barefoot and in a swimsuit and no one gives me a second glance (except my brother's high school friends lol, 'cause I wave at them) the good old days still exist. I walk everywhere and I'm safe!

Oh yeah, I wanted to ask if being Christian makes you more or less squeamish about dark themes and morally dubious things.
One of my very favorite redemption movies is PITCH BLACK, a breakout role for Vin Diesel. And my absolute favorite is PULP FICTION, which features my favorite speech in all of cinema there at the end in the diner.

Sis, how--Well, you do live in a small town...

If I may ask, why are you on a site for Christian writers if you're not religious? Sorry if that's rude, I don't mean any offense. And you don't have to answer, ofc.

Yeah I don’t mind answering this. So I already shared that I used to hang out with a Christian fellowship in college and took a religious studies class about the Bible. I’m curious about the religious aspect of Christianity and I wanted to check the level of the writers here... (hehe)

My family comes from a Buddhist background. So when my grandfather fled Maoist China, the official state religion was atheism. Mao wanted to smash the “four olds,” which included old beliefs like Buddhism. So in America, where people have taken religious liberty for granted, I wanted to see how serious people took their faith, and what their faith stood for. Mostly, I thought the Christian fellowship in college was a social group (with an ulterior motive to find dates on the DL.)

Which I suppose is to be expected when you’re in college.

Really, what I wanted to find is sincerity. And people who can write well.

Pulp Fiction is quite lovely. Five dollars for a shake is normal these days >:)

I didn’t think it was obnoxious, but if you ban something, that makes the kids want to read it even more

Respect.

True, we do have better stuff now, but I can't help but agree with @Grey_Skies. The '50s were a lot more modest in dress and beliefs, and it would've been a lot safer to grow up in that era than it is now. Whereas this day and age is a lot more revealing in dress and immersed in a lot more different religions. Then there's all of those missing kids every year...

The 50s were before the Civil Rights Era, you would’ve had a lot less opportunities.

No, you wouldn’t want to live in the 50s. You had the Cold War, the Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution that killed 50-80 million people in China, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cambodian Genocide...

There was WAY more suffering back then.

If you want to live in middle class suburban America during the 1950s, you’ll have to give up the rights and privileges you have today

👀 👀 👀 Lucky!  I'm always watching out for possible kidnappers - maybe I'm just paranoid and got trust issues from reading so much. 😂

That reminds me of a website that my dad asked me to watch one video from a day...Talks about what you can do to avoid getting kidnapped. Would you like the link to it?
