Just for Fun National Grammer Day

Yup. That's on my list! 👍 🤪

On TV News Reports, individuals are often called "They", which is plural, instead of "He" or She".

Spelling? ugh. A true story...
When I was in 6th grade the teacher would stand all the kids up against the wall. He'd start at one end of the line, and give the kid a word to spell verbally. Then the next in line would get a different word. On down the line he went. The first 3 kids to miss a word got an F. The next 5 got a D. The next 10 got a C. And so on until the last 3 standing, who got an A.

Well I was terrified. Traumatized. Ever since then, I couldn't spell for the life of me. I think I'm over it now, except for this eye twitch that happens every time I think about it. :D

gifted. Gift is a noun. Give is a verb. You give something or something is given or someone gave. You receive or give a gift.
NOT gifted!!!

Well that's one way to do a spelling B. I half dreaded Friday because it was spelling quiz day, but now I look forward to Friday thanks to Friday Funnies. (Thank you Christianwriters!)

At one point, my teacher allowed me to sometimes earn extra credit by making up a poem or something with the vocabulary words that demonstrated that I knew how to use them (and spell them) That really helped me out as that class was a struggle for me. My favorite of those poems was one called "The Financier and his Niece." I also wrote a sequel to it later, but that one wasn't as good. They were not the best poetry, but it helped save my grades.

I might be out of school now, but I live in a perpetual spelling B, with someone always shouting out random words through out the day that we have to figure out the spelling to really fast. Usually they are simple words, but occasionally there are those words that I use all the time and STILL have no clue how to spell. 🤣

When I was in school, what bothered me wasn't spelling bees. It was misspelling on my homework. While I tried to write my best, I did too many misspellings, which led to poor grades, and to me just barely making it through all 12 years in elementary, junior high and high school. I did so badly that I decided not to go to college, since I'd probably flunk out in the first semester.
However, I always wanted to be a writer, and I knew that I didn't have to go to college to become one. That's what I did. I put school behind me. I stayed at home, and got a day job, working in a restaurant as a dishwasher. At night, I used a typewriter and slowly developed my writing skills. I began mailing typewritten pages in envelopes, to different publishers.
That started when I was in my early 20s. I am now 79 years old and have been an unsuccessful writer for more than 60 years. I now do all my writing here, in the Community Discussion section of christianwriters.com, joining with many writers who I consider good friends. None of whom have given me any bad grades on my spelling.
Thank the Lord. In Jesus Name. Amen.

THERE, THEIR, THEY'RE
Even as a teacher, I wouldn't send the fellow to Hell, but I would make him take some spelling lessons. Maybe that's purgatory.

Folks, context trumps spelling. Why, I'm pleased as punch to celebrate Kelsey's acting career.

Another true one: I won a 5th grade class spelling bee with "Spaghetti". I was always fascinated reading the ingredients on packages/cans--especially cereal boxes.

NOT gifted!!!
Ummm...actually? It is a verb. ;) From Merriam-Webster:

gift
verb
gifted; gifting; gifts
transitive verb
1 : to endow with some power, quality, or attribute
She's been gifted with a beautiful voice.

2 : to make a gift of
It makes an excellent choice whether you're gifting one bottle for the honeymoon or a case to be savored for years, or even decades, to come.—Robert Taylor

: present
gifted her with flowers
In this, her ninth novel, she has succeeded in gifting us with a story that will stay with us for a long time.—
Dorothy Rochmis

Ugh! I was/am a pretty good speller. In one of the spelling bees in the sixth grade, as we all lined up, when my turn came, I was given the word tried. And I spelled it t-i-r-e-d. Grrr!!! Years later, I found I had/have some dyslexia. 😜

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤣 That has got to be new since so many people keep using it wrong. 🤣 My Mom is going to be so mad when she finds out that got added to the dictionary. She hates it when people use it that way.

This is how languages change, by the way people use it. Someday nobody will put an apostrophe in "it's" because so many people leave it out.

From etymonline.com, gift (v): "bestow a gift," 16c., from "gift" (n.). Related: gifted, gifting
I presume the 16c. = 16th century, so that use has been around a long time. It's just not common in the English we use in the U.S.

(Will post on Friday funnies too)

Grammatically, he did the right thing...
