Bishop Robert Barron’s “The Most Important Decision in Life” 2023 commencement speech is a call for Christians to live Christlike lives. It is so compelling, I think it a classic.
Thank you, SC John,

Like you said, it was an excellent commencement speech. While Bishop Robert Barron spoke several notable truths, the one about getting out of bed in the morning was a favorite. The bishop said,

“No one would get out of bed in the morning unless he believed in some value that is ultimately motivating his actions and decisions. This might be bodily pleasure or fame or material goods, or it might be one’s country or family, but if it is functioning as the prime mover of a person’s activity, it is playing the role of a god and it is being, in effect, worshiped.”

If the Lord of Glory is our first thought in the morning and our last thought at night, then we made the most important (right) decision in life. But then, we go on deciding for Him every hour of the day, day after day until we hear that blessed wakeup call to come home. Thank you for sharing! Blessings!

A clarification about Bishop Robert Barron.

While the bishop’s speech was inspirational, it was written at a level high enough to include all having placed faith in Jesus Christ. Catholics as well as Protestants could easily wrap their mind around the message. I did. However, when we begin to peel away the "levels of biblical meaning" we discover truths that divide. As a believer my view of the Gospel differs from Catholicism including the ecumenical movement, of which Bishop Robert Barron is a member. Yes, we can celebrate the truth but not without turning to the page to discover what that truth means. Blessings

Amen, GYC! I’m glad you took the time to note that quote. It’s a keeper.

Thanks, John, for sharing this. I enjoyed the commencement speech. Yes, it's a thought-provoking piece with some excellent points to consider. I really like the questions about the soul and injustice. Blessings, my friend.
