I had to put my faithful companion, Blue, to sleep on Friday. You might have read about her in my post "Haunted Walks & Winter Wonderlands (part 4)." I'm known for my Charlie Brown luck and she was my Snoopy (note the Charlie Brown Christmas tree in the photo ;)).

She went to sleep while my girls were in school. When they came home, they asked where she was. I had to explain her death and what caused it. I comforted and consoled them while they cried. My oldest asked, "I know they don't have a soul like us, but do dogs go to heaven?"

"Honey, God created all things, including Ole Blue, and He can bring her into heaven if he wants to."

My youngest perked up, sniffled, and wiped her tears on her sleave. "You think Blue is up there, Dad?"

"I can't say for sure, darlin', but if she is, I'll bet she's sniffin' around and checking the place out."

So my question for you, my brothers and sisters, is how have you, or would you, explain the loss of a family pet to your little ones? Do you believe God wills some of our pets into heaven 'cause He loves them too? Or, is our love for our Blessed Lord so strong that we will forget all about them while in His presence?

Side story: I was trying to write at the kitchen counter last week with the windows and sliding door open. That pesky blue jay came 'round squawking. A weak and emaciated Ole Blue recognized its noisy call. She stumbled from her bed in the laundry room, ears perked up, and looking at me. She knew that bird annoyed the heck out of me. and wanted to chase it off. It broke my heart, but I said, "Alright, girl, let's go get 'em." She meandered to the door, tail wagging. I opened it and followed her out. The bird saw us and immediately took flight. She turned to look at me, satisfied she had done her job. I sat on the step and said "Good girl." She stumbled to me and laid her head against my leg. We just sat in the sun for a bit. Doggone, I miss her.

Awww, I'm so sorry, HW. It's always heartbreaking to lose furry family member. If dogs go to heaven, then heaven must be overrun with dogs. Without a soul though, I wouldn't think there would be any dogs. However, maybe they do go to heaven because they were beloved by their owners. I think you responded to your girls quite well. I don't remember if our kids ever asked that question throughout the years of lost pets. Praying for all of you. ❤️ 🙏

So sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is always so hard because they really do become "one of the family."

For a long time, I struggled with the same question you're asking. When I was 11, I lost my beloved dog in a very traumatic way, and at that tender age I didn't know how to emotionally process or deal with it.

Most of the people I know and talk to don't believe animals go to heaven. Personally, I'd like to believe otherwise. God created animals (for our enjoyment, I believe), and the Bible references many animals that will be in heaven. I would like to think that at least some of our beloved furry friends will be there also.

Well, technically neither humans nor animals will be in Heaven (but I know what you mean.) When God restores creation, that’s where we’ll be, on the new earth. Since creation wasn’t complete without animals last time, I can’t imagine, that the new creation wouldn’t have them. We’d all (including God) feel like something was missing…

My answer is too long to post here, so I put it in Stories and Articles. (I didn't think it belonged in Critique and Feedback.)
My reply to your story. Isaiah 65:17-25 - New Heavens and a New Earth where the wolf and the lamb feed together. God will do as he pleases with his creation, including the animals there. Therefore, I have to believe there is a chance for the faithful furry companions I've had to wag their tails for me again one day. ;)

When God restores creation, that’s where we’ll be, on the new earth.
Just a side thought... I've wondered how vast the new Earth will be. How many souls (and possibly pets) from the human history will inhabit it. Oh the things we'll see, God willing.

Lovely photo.

I have had to say good bye to 2 dogs and am not.looking forward to the day I have say it to my present 4 legged. companion..

Heaven. Yes definitely. I fully expect.to see them all in the next life. Can't image why not.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved companion. Many of us know the pain and long to be with them. You asked if dogs go to heaven? Many pet lovers ask the same question. Some say yes. Some say no. No one knows for sure, except God. What does He say? The Bible does indeed mention animals in heaven. So, we know they are there. While the Bible is silent about pets going to heaven, there are a few promises in the Bible that give a glimmer of hope. In Psalms we find these words of comfort.

“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:4).

Of course, our desires are for the Lord of Glory and the wonder of heaven. And it may be that some will never think of their pets again. You are not one of them, and neither am I.

God knows our desires and if we delight ourselves in the LORD, why would He not allow His children to one day have and embrace their beloved little ones after the creation of the new heavens and the new earth? Would not these pets, in a small way, add to the glory of eternity with God? I think so. An unknown author wrote,

“They will not go quietly, the pets who’ve shared our lives. In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survives.”

I hope you find comfort in the promises of God, and the words from the unknown author.

May the Lord bless you during this difficult time.

I went through this a couple of months ago. Our daughters first (and only cat) that had been with her for as long as she remembered passed away. It was a pretty traumatic time for her.

As for how we dealt with it, we took this as an opportunity to show our daughter that we wouldn't lie, or water down scripture or the understanding of the bible and just give her an answer that 'tickled her ears', and the importance of being honest, and truthful with scripture. (As well as acknowledging it as being the Word of God, and how to treat it with the reverence due).

So with that, I was straight out honest, with "We don't know, but..." and then went on to talk about the character and qualities of God and how we can put our faith in Him even when we don't understand or are hurting. That infact, that's a good part of what faith is. Trusting in Him even when we don't understand or it hurts.

We are also teaching our daughter that we shouldn't base what we believe on what we want to believe, as that risks leading us down into idolatry (creating a God, and therefore a religion formed in an image of what we want mentally, and then worshipping that image, instead of seeking who God really is through scripture).

Likewise, we are teaching through it that we shouldn't quickly come to conclusions based on emotion, but rather the importance, and necessity of thinking objectively - even if we don't like the conclusion.

(I think I've touched more in Carolinamtne's blog a little deeper and with scriptural references that may be helpful . I hope this is of some help).

I am so sorry for your loss-both your husband and your dog. Death is so hard. I am thankful the LORD walks through the grief with us.

The Scripture says "Love never ends." Therein lies our hope. We serve a VERY generous King who allowed these creations to come, not just into our homes, but into our hearts.
We loved them. They loved us. Even though the Scriptures don't, actually, say that they don't go to Heaven, we DO know that real love is eternal. Amen? King Jesus delights in giving us the desires of our hearts as long as they don't hinder our devotion and worship of Him. Amen?
So, let's just get there, Family, and allow Him the pleasure of awarding us with the BEST of the BEST! Who knows what that may be? Amen?
Blessings 🌷🌷🌷

Thank you, all of you, for your wonderful responses. Yes, we do serve an amazing God, so anything is possible. (There's a Bible verse to that effect.)
