I had to put my faithful companion, Blue, to sleep on Friday. You might have read about her in my post "Haunted Walks & Winter Wonderlands (part 4)." I'm known for my Charlie Brown luck and she was my Snoopy (note the Charlie Brown Christmas tree in the photo
).
She went to sleep while my girls were in school. When they came home, they asked where she was. I had to explain her death and what caused it. I comforted and consoled them while they cried. My oldest asked, "I know they don't have a soul like us, but do dogs go to heaven?"
"Honey, God created all things, including Ole Blue, and He can bring her into heaven if he wants to."
My youngest perked up, sniffled, and wiped her tears on her sleave. "You think Blue is up there, Dad?"
"I can't say for sure, darlin', but if she is, I'll bet she's sniffin' around and checking the place out."
So my question for you, my brothers and sisters, is how have you, or would you, explain the loss of a family pet to your little ones? Do you believe God wills some of our pets into heaven 'cause He loves them too? Or, is our love for our Blessed Lord so strong that we will forget all about them while in His presence?

Side story: I was trying to write at the kitchen counter last week with the windows and sliding door open. That pesky blue jay came 'round squawking. A weak and emaciated Ole Blue recognized its noisy call. She stumbled from her bed in the laundry room, ears perked up, and looking at me. She knew that bird annoyed the heck out of me. and wanted to chase it off. It broke my heart, but I said, "Alright, girl, let's go get 'em." She meandered to the door, tail wagging. I opened it and followed her out. The bird saw us and immediately took flight. She turned to look at me, satisfied she had done her job. I sat on the step and said "Good girl." She stumbled to me and laid her head against my leg. We just sat in the sun for a bit. Doggone, I miss her.
