Is it considered acceptable to submit a short story to a literary journal if you intend to expand it to a novel-length MS for submission to a book publisher at a later date?

You know, I don't think it's wise. It would be considered published. Someone else may have a different opinion.

That’s actually a question I asked myself, except that I’d be self-publishing it afterwards. What you brought up is how many old novels were published, in short story fashion, but I’m not sure if that’s allowed anymore. I’d be curious to see what other people think. And by the way, welcome to the site! If you made an introductory post and I missed it, oh well, I’m saying “welcome” now!
