Writing & Publishing Sure way to obscurity

Yeah, pretty much so for a majority of books.

But as @lynnmosher mentioned, it really depends on your goal with the book.

The real question is how do you promote it in an effective way. I'll just say that there are many possibilities, and which ones really work always changes.

I have not yet learned how to promote my books, but I have a plan. I am a month or two away from self-publishing my fourth nonfiction book. The newest book and the two preceding it have a common focus on the wisdom books of the Bible. I now have enough material on the subject to slice it into separate articles. Once the book is out, I will create a writer's website. I will find the book chapters with the most interesting and self-contained ideas and rewrite them as articles for the website. Since I the three books come to about 750,000 words, I have enough material to release regular articles for several years.

Once the website is up, I will submit a few articles to online newpapers or journals that have a habit of publishing articles related to my subject. They will link to my website, which in turn will point to Amazon and other places where my books can be purchased.

Only then I will purchase advertisements for my books that also point to my website. Ads can work, but only if they point to free content that people can browse to size you up as a writer.

If that plan fails, I will consider youtube or other video sites. I tried making a video and it is time consuming to do the editing. Not my forte. I would rather write.
