If you're on the internet, which you are if you're reading this, you must read this new law...

The Internet just changed forever, but most people living in the United States don’t even realize what just happened. A draconian new law known as the “Digital Services Act” went into effect in the European Union on Friday, and it establishes an extremely strict regime of Internet censorship that is far more authoritarian than anything we have ever seen before. From this point forward, hordes of European bureaucrats will be the arbiters of what is acceptable to say on the Internet. If they discover something that you have said on a large online platform that they do not like, they can force that platform to take it down, because someone in Europe might see it. So even though this is a European law, the truth is that it is going to have a tremendous impact on all of us.

Finish it here.

Maybe someone should contact the European Union, and request that they let us know ahead of time, exactly what is or isn't acceptable. Maybe we should also contact our own Government, and request that they do what they can to protect our Constitutional Right to Freedom of Expression.

It's coming to Australia too I think. Maybe in a different way. There's a 'ministry of truth' bill (which is called the 'disinformation act' instead) where the government is wanting to have more say over what people can and can't say, plus what's considered truth and what's not.

The push for censorship and control over speech / death of freedom of speech is in full effect. Unfortunately, we don't have a bill of rights here (or a decent constitution) like America. Not that it probably matters much anyway, our constitutional rights were breached 2 years ago by government, and there's no accountability or care.

Look up - our redemption draws nigh!

Oh dear! I'm so sorry. :(

AMEN!!! 👍

IP stands for "Internet Protocol," which is the set of rules governing the format of data sent via the internet or local network. In essence, IP addresses are the identifier that allows information to be sent between devices on a network: they contain location information and make devices accessible for communication.

It's the address of your computer.

Great idea! Wish we could! ;)
It'd require talking to the ISP/webhost. Aka they'd not be interested in doing the work either. But AFAIK, we live outside the EU, so if they do shut us down, it does open them up for potential lawsuits of infringement of the rights of those who do live in the country they are based in. Gonna be real interesting to see how that works out. You know, this is just an example of how nations are trying to invade the space of their neighbors. The is a need to start defining national internet borders. I mean, China has done it for the most part (The Great Firewall of China). The problem is of course, do we really want to follow a Chinese model?

Every time I turn around, I hear of more infringement of our individual rights. This sound more and more like the government written about by George Orwell in his book 1984. I had to read it when I was a freshman in college. Also had to read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. (1964-65) When we actually lived in the real 1984, I seemed to hold my breath every time I heard news about our government.

@M.D. Boncher, I enjoyed your Venn diagram. While I never read Fahrenheit 451, I understand what it is about. Thank you for sharing this with us.

This new EU law IS precisely Farenheit 451... Bradbury just didn't know that digital book burning was coming.
(Insert brownshirts throwing books onto a german political rally pyre here.)

Governments only take rights away and enslave those foolish enough to trust them all in the name of "safety". That's why I only half jokingly said, we should just block anyone trying to connect to our content from the EU. Problem is solved. We don't have to censor ourselves, their fascist Godless government of the EU are free from having their sheeple riled up.

The problem is that's the responsible action but that requires vigilance and responsible behavior on curating of information by individuals. Best I can do is stop selling my books over in Europe. Which honestly I may do. Yes it will cost me some sales, because I do sell books in Europe. But if they're going to ban me anyway... why should I care about that potential money? More trouble and danger than what it's worth.
