Since the beginning of the Iron Age there have been chains. There are chains adorning your neck, as a redundant means of securing a trailer, chains tie rail cars together, affix timepieces to our wrists, are used to lift heavy objects with a hoist, secure loads on trucks, chains are certainly handy and beautiful things. When we think of chains we think heavy duty, flexible, multi-purpose, easy to manipulate, an all around useful item to have around especially for specific jobs.

The word chain is versatile in itself. I’ve got this 1939 Merriam-Webster and the definitions are so many I don’t want to count them much less type them all in. After all, this is supposed to be brief, so…a series of objects connected one after the other, usually in the form of a series of metal rings passing through one another, used either for various purposes requiring a flexible tie with high tensile strength, as for hauling, supporting, or confining, or in various ornamental and decorative forms. It goes on to describe chain belt, chain coral, chain stitch, chain reactions, to unite close and strong — there are several more.

The Romans used chains. All kinds of them. Just like we do today, although I bet the wristwatch sundials were a bit much. I’m sure blacksmiths had a thriving profession as they hand pounded out links upon links for chariots and armor, right alongside of their swords, their knives, spears, arrows. Let’s face it…the Romans lived to conquer and were the enemy of many peoples. They would overwhelm a city by sheer numbers or siege them killing indiscriminately until who was left gave up into slavery or sport. Known pretty much worldwide for their brutality and lack of respect for human life many horrible atrocities were performed. Chains gave them the ability to rule by taking something innocuous and turning it into a weapon of terror.

The dark side is still chained to man’s nature.

That is the tangible, physical description of a solid three-dimensional object that is a chain. There is more in the list of definitions and describe chain in a different light: that which binds or fetters like a prisoner, bondage, slavery, affliction, to enslave. If you are alive you know about this other kind of chain that binds our spirits. We can be in chains to lust for money, power, material possessions, an attitude, a regret, to be famous, conquering, or any of the seven sins among others. If you see that I missed one, perhaps therein lies your chain.

The Romans used weapons of the physical. Swords, armor, and all those kinds of metal tools especially made for terrorizing and commanding dominion over the enslaved using tactics of cruelty to keep them in bondage, like being nailed to a cross. Our enemy uses different kinds of tools that are not physical, and they wield them from the experience and practice of thousands of years. From subtle to blatant the attack on our spirit is unrelenting and comes from all sides.

The Romans would figuratively and physically chain the peoples conquered into slavery and bondage where they would serve a cruel master…oppression. Have you ever felt oppressed? Beaten down? Have the twenty-four, seven belonging to someone else and performing whatever task is at hand or whim as expected or get whipped or die. They did not have any say over their life, what or when they ate, worked, slept, bathed, anything…everything. Their life was not theirs even if they had somewhat of a kinder owner they were completely at his mercy. Possessions or commodities were they. Spiritual chains are like that.

Chains are heavy duty and are used to bind something up. If we are in bondage, locked up in chains over something that is holding us down from being the person Jesus calls us to be we can just throw those chains off and move forward — right? First we need to realize the mechanism that got us there in the first place before we can even understand what those chains are. We would not willingly be placed into chains of bondage to follow whatever master has us bound. Yet, those chains do not belong to you. Our enemy has control of them, you through them, and make the Roman’s cruelty look like kindness. Those chains are tightly locked into your very essence, deep into your decision-making, your attitude, your character, all that you are — make no mistake or be complacent. None of us are exempt from the onslaught. Those masters are not only cruel, but very thorough and have been at this for a long, long time. They care not for your job, marriage, or life, and their goal is to kill and destroy, taking you on a path of oppression and suffering along the way in which they delight in having complete control. The Romans have nothing on them. Sounds very grim, doesn’t it, and I did not even mention the continual, relentless barrage of the siege against our souls — the very essence of who we are — attempting to force our allegiance, over-run us, wrap us in tightly binding chains. The perpetrators are more real than you think, we are in the midst of a battle, and you know it. Deep down we all know light from dark, good from evil, right from wrong and the forces behind them.

Think about our enemy, his objective, and his weapons for a moment. Our enemy is vicious and barbarous, his objective is to drive you to miss the righteous path which includes a relationship with Jesus taking as many people as possible with you, and his weapons. Oh the weapons, like well oiled machines. Feel isolated, oppressed, down in the dumps, despondent, hopeless, stuck, ineffective, a failure, incompetent, like a loser, like a jerk… How about useless, unwanted, unloved, unworthy, invisible, picked last, or just plain old lost? …did I miss one?

Physical wars are fought with weapons intended to take your life. Many weapons and tactics are used in that physical warfare, but we fight against a different kind of foe. There will be no attempt to list spiritual means here, but one parallel — our enemy’s fiery darts are akin to a ten-foot-long spear of splinters, launched with great accuracy and furiously malicious malevolence, armed with a twelve pound payload of misery, misdirection, and lies exploding in our heart and mind. The effects within the blast radius are like ripples on a pond going farther than the eye can see. Our help and strong tower is the source of wisdom and the final authority of all things. We know how we are to prepare for battle and the nature of our enemy’s weapons clearly from the scriptures:

2 Co 10:3-5 ...For though we live as human beings, we do not wage war according to human standards, for the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, but are made powerful by God for tearing down strongholds. We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ. NET

Eph 6:10-18 ...A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. NLT

If there is the smallest, tiniest shred of His brilliant, unquenchable light inside you, it has the power to break any chain. Remove any oppression. Correct any course. Free any slave. Defend any attack. With the power of His Word He can break any stronghold the enemy has. Not just for you, but for those around you also. He is above every chain, has rule over everything, and rest assured — He is alive and well. We simply just have to obey, knowing who we are in Christ.

John 1:1-4 ...In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God. The Word was with God in the beginning. All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. NET

There will arise for some that are bound an acceptance, a surrendering to the horrible situation, a ‘give in, give up’ mentality, or maybe just convince themselves that it’s not so bad and just go with it — captivity becomes the normal and they just blind themselves to the fact they will never have their own life. Past desperation or any sense of reaching their potential. Past trying to change. Past hope. Past even caring enough to try to escape anymore. Past thinking it’s so bad. Did I miss one…? A very unpalatable and dangerous situation to get to.

Our souls live forever. They are fabricated in the likeness of a God who created all things including these shells that host His perfect creation that has the ability to contain His Light. Created to spend eternity with Him. Created to be loved by Him. Able to love Him back. Created to be capable of having the mind of His son Jesus. Created to understand the truth of His Word and to know it will not come back void.

Chain yourself to His Living Word. Contained within it are all we need to navigate this life and He can break ANY chain with its supernatural love and guidance. Seek Jesus with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and He will find you.

John 8:36 ...Jesus answered them, “I tell you the solemn truth, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin. The slave does not remain in the family forever, but the son remains forever. So if the son sets you free, you will be really free. NET

tiptoe in, attack planned

knowing every fear

waiting for his eyes to close

presence very near

reaching out with lying tongues

abhorring truth and light

master liars, priding themselves

to spin a twisted tale

hidden corners illuminate

in various shades of gray

bringing sorrow, pain, grief, and such

into the light of the nighttime day

make his dreams seem real to him

an alternate life that he lives

people, places, and memories unique

to the nighttime world that does exist

pictures painted of sorrows

believing that it’s real

the fear, pain, and tears pale out

to utter loss of hope

slowly reaching his conscious mind

appealing to wants and desires

rearranging normal priorities

little by little he hits his knees

things seen cause concern

that he knows not any more

where he comes from, or where he will go

life has become a raging cyclone

fierce battle begun anew

footholds dug in deep

attacks launched cruel

with glee working the tools

mind and body blitzed
