Unfortunately, if you have daughters, those six verbs are still too strong.

"I suppose Hope wants Guess jeans; think how much I need to spend!"

Fortunately, none of my daughters are named hope and they shop at Savers all the time (a local thrift shop chain).

That sounds like your daughters are teenagers?

One teen, two early twenties. But by spending most days at home on Zoom for college, the social forces that would have changed their teenage habits are thwarted.

Interesting, but ultimately subjective. I think it depends on the situation and how any of these words are used. (And yes, I intentionally used think, because it's my opinion.)

For instance, under the word need, the proposed weak use is “I need this report as soon as possible.”  I worked in the business world for over 30 years, and this was a clear, common way to express a request. I would never consider it weak. The only thing I'd change is to state a more defined time that the report is needed. "As soon as possible" should be more clear, like "by the end of the day."

However, I find  the alternate way proposed, “Please have this report to me by next Friday,” the weaker of the two. Why? Because the use of please in this example is pleading with someone, while the first example was clear that I needed the report, which coveys my authority in the request.

I've held off commenting because...well, I wanted to see what others thought. I rather disagree with some of that article. And I agree with Accord. In the business world, what Accord has said is true. I can't see that the suggested alternatives would work. Now, that said, writing dialogue would be a different matter.
