Hey all,

I'm (still) trying to create a website ... but good news! I've snagged a tech savvy millennial to help me! LOL.

However I have a question about stock photos - is it okay to use "free" photos from Pixabay or Shutterstock? I found a cool one and inserted my book title, etc. and I'm hoping it's okay to use. I did sign up for a Free Trial on Shutterstock and was able to load the image into my files without a problem.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Shutterstock is not free. It's a subscription service. Though they may offer freebies on occasions. "All Shutterstock images are Royalty Free, and all images bought with subscription and image packs come with a Shutterstock Standard License. This license allows you to use photos for commercial purposes, but they have restrictions."

However, Pixabay is free to use. But they may have some restrictions. I'd check and be sure.

There are tons of sites out there that offer free images. I've posted on these many times. I think I posted the list somewhere. Can't look right now. Will check later.

Be sure you check out about GDPR (general data protection regulation). So you are in compliance. I would also subscribe to the blogposts of Blogaid.net. Will keep you up to date on everything.

There are others that have popped up. I apologize that I don't have time to list them right now. There are really a bazillion sites out there. Just depends on what kind of image you want. You can always google it.

Pixabay, Unsplash, and many photos on Pexels (if not all, I'm not sure) are good resources. :)

Thank you, you two. I'm humbled. But genius does not fit. Just active user and participant are more like it.;)

A word of warning about free sites such as Pixabay. You need to be extra careful to make sure that the image you're using has the proper releases. Free sites are often not as stringent in ensuring that the people and locations depicted have actually given their permission to be used.

Pixabay themselves say here that you need to do your own due diligence and check whether what you're using the image for is actually allowed.

It's very possible that a photographer might take a picture of a person in a particular location, then upload the photo to be used on a free site. However, if the photographer hasn't secured a release from the model or from the location in the picture, there could potentially be trouble down the road.

This is why I've opted to use places like Deposit Photos and Shutterstock to get all my images. It costs a fee, but I know that all the necessary releases have been acquired before the pictures are ever uploaded onto the site.

Thanks for your comments, EB. That was the intent of my warning but you rounded it out much better. ;)
