Poetry Challenge 2014

Recommended Posts

A slightly belated welcome to 2014. Happy New Year to you all. A new challenge for this year then - let's have another 'relay'. Rules of engagement - pick the third line of the previous post as your first line. Should be an easy enough rule to follow but please be sure that you've scrolled through to the most recent post for that line. Probably help if you put your third line into a different colour. Happy writing everybody.

Here goes with my New Year starter:

The lights go out

at the turning of the year,

everything and nothing changes

with the striking resolution of twelve.

The rain abated for our walk home,

stars and fireworks perforated the sky

with showers of colour

and the crazy assault of percussion.

The warmth of bed in the early hours

a welcome retreat before

the earnest new beginning

and love

that never ended.

Everything and nothing changes,

time continues, the earth remains

seasons change but stay the same

and souls are lost and found.

Life is to be lived in all its fullness

until our own time has come

to enter another sphere

the heaven of god's creation.

Seasons change but stay the same,

the detail differs daily;

wrinkles grow in laughter lines

permanent scars of mirth.

The hand of God

grasps ever firmer

my loose grip

as we nearer

closer moments

and the sharing of our humour.

Wrinkles grow in laughter lines

a picture read and seen

of serenity and wisdom

through years of care and love

it holds my gaze

captures my mind

speaks volumes to my soul

helps to guide me onwards

this portrait on the wall.

Of serenity and wisdom of which God gives from the start,

I awoke this sweet morning with such peace on my heart.

Which opened doors for light worship and Yahweh to be praised,

I drew close to Him.

He spoke to my heart and reminded me of this,

That to write is a calling and a gift that is His.

And to my great discernment I did not come upon this amiss,

But right on time.

Which opened doors for light worship and Yahweh to be praised

do I take time to enter and my own voice do raise?

to join the great cacophony of worship, sound and light

ringing throughout our daytime and through the darkest night

this never ending wave of love, petition, praise and thanks

to Father, Son and Holy Ghost above the heavenly ranks.

To join the great cacophony of worship, sound and light,

My incense lifted up to Him, my praise is His delight.

I'll be just like the Angels, who praise Him never ceasing,

While bowing down to Holy God, His love for me increasing.

Holy, Holy, Holy.....Holy are You King,

My praise to You is humbling me and now my heart will sing!

I'll be just like the Angels, who praise Him never ceasing,

still a little lower, yet higher in God's reaching.

Where around the Throne will I be when the Bride meets Day?

Happy those who keep their lamps lit along the Way!

Where around the throne will I be when the Bride meets Day

Where I will come face to face with The Truth, The Life, The Way

There every knee will bow and every tongue confess

That Jesus is Lord of all that God had blessed

He came for the righteous and those of sin whom broke free

He came for the sick, the poor, and sinners such as me

To join Him in His Kingdom, where He will rule on high

A Kingdom for which I pray will include you and I

There every knee will bow and every tongue confess,

That God as King, most Holy being, is one I will profess.

Majestic on His throne, high and lifted up,

I bow to Him most loving one, to Him I lift my cup.

When I am dry and empty and feeling not quite right,

I look to You my Holy King to show Your Glory light.

Upon my heart to heal my soul, to fill my cup again,

So I can be your vessel, to love the hearts of men.

Majestic on His throne, high and lifted up

He has made us Gods own, in Spirit He's lifted us

Learning to place our trust in the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, strength and soul

Father my life is yours to control

Yours to make whole, to redeem and make new

Father God I forever praise you

Learning to place our trust in the Lord our God, with all our heart, mind, strength and soul,

Is a quest and a process long lasting, one with rewards, this should be our goal.

To trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding,

To lean on Him and all His commands and not on the world who is demanding.

That we live by the precepts of a kingdom that offer no promise of life,

But leads us down paths of unrighteousness, anger, discord and strife.

But to live by the fruits of the Spirit, now that's a promise we should strive for to keep,

For to hear His sweet voice, say, "Well done my dear child", is by faith, not by stride, but by leap.

To trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding

is difficult in some situations

when our take on things

seem so much more practical than his.

In the end though the way of the Lord is best

for His is the only perfect way,

the way pointing to peace, joy and love,

I like this poetry challenge, never taken part in anything like it before. The challenge not only sharpens participants mind as you read what others have written it also highlights aspects of the Lord and his way of working that you never saw before or had forgotten.

When our take on things,

Is not quite what it seemed, we often wonder, who's in control.

Then we hear from within that still quiet voice,

Then we know it's the God of our soul.

And we ask ourselves should I think for myself,

'Cause this road becomes unfamiliar sometimes,

And we realize our role, learning doctrines of old,

As we put it into lines that rhyme.

Then we hear from within that still quiet voice,

when storms prevail

and the thunderous wind of life

lays seige,

the soft voice of calm

bringing peace that the darkness

cannot understand.

And the thunderous wind of life

is no match for Ruach Hakodesh.[a]

Peril breaks its blade in battle

and the angels shout in triumph.

This is but one battle among the many,

the Enemy is sly.

The redeemed begin another hymn

spiritual warfare led with praise.

[a] Hebrew for Holy Spirit

Peril breaks its blade in battle an occurrence rare but true

defenceless but for shield of faith

and breastplate armour sound,

a helmet of salvation

a never ending truth

to live or die it matters not

my life is held by God.

And breastplate armor sound,

To stand against the wiles of the evil one,

For rulers and authorities and the powers of this dark world,

Matters not to the Sword of the Spirit that conquers all,

And triumphs over all darkness that seeks to encroach upon His Holy ones.

For flaming arrows and fiery darts cannot pierce the hearts of a people,

Who take cover under His wings which no foe can withstand!

For rulers and authorities and the powers of this dark world

Will soon put to rest the insults they have hurled

Toward our King of kings and Lord of lords

Let our hearts praise you in harmonizing chords

For love, which on us has poured

My Jesus, my Savior, you are loved and adored

Toward our King of kings and Lord of lords

we turn our hearts, this very morn.

For who has descended, lived here, gone up

but the Son, the Lamb, God of Abraham?

Wow. It's like encourag[ing] one another with songs, hymns and spiritual songs. A real treat, blessing.

In the process, I'm reminded that God both expects us to give our all and yet not worry about being perfect. Kind of like, it's better to act out of a sincere heart, rough edges and all, than to think high thoughts and be mute. And then, over time, we become not only more in-tune with God and others, we actually appear more representative of the attractive Image of Christ.

Well, that's a mouthful, but I'm just grateful and want to say so.

For who has descended, lived here, gone up

Jesus, our Messiah, God's Son whom he loved

Gone to prepare a place for us

His amazing grace is truth and just

Pleading our case before God the Father

That we will return to him, Salvations' Author
