5 tips to help you write your memoir

Recommended Posts

Here are 5 tips for writing your memoir...

1. Write at the same time each day. Establishing a routine is key for creating momentum in your writing. Choose a specific time to write daily. Whether it’s in the morning with your cup of java, before bed, or anytime in between. Just be consistent!

2. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar. Right now, your memoir writing is about keeping a record and not about being published. As you write, try to do it in the way you speak. It’s best not to focus on correcting mistakes. Just let your writing flow.

3. Write your memoir truthfully. Write what actually happened, not what you wished had happened. There’s freedom in expressing your memories honestly. When you tell the truth, you gain insights about yourself and the deeper meaning of your life.

4. Put your personality into it. You have your perspective on life, and a unique writer’s voice to express it. Let your personality inform the way you write. Do you have a dry sense of humor? An eccentric viewpoint? A quick wit? A poetic eloquence? Allow your personality to come through without stifling it.

5. Find a mentor. When learning a craft like memoir writing, expedite the process by working with someone who is a seasoned and successful professional. Save yourself years of frustration and mistakes by incorporating “hidden gems”--tools and insights that can move your writing to a whole new level. Feedback from a professional mentor can genuinely transform your writing, especially if that mentor is a best-selling, award-winning author like Karen Mains!

There's a memoir writing class if you'd like to check it out.
