A few nights ago, I had a restless sleep. While half-awake, I tried to recall some Scripture verses that would speak to our resting in the Lord. The passage, “God is love” * came to mind: not just the expression but the impression of each word. My body and mind quieted down as I thought further on this. Here, a further delving…

Everyone hungers within the course of time,
but hunger of the spirit started before each one’s clock was wound.
How deceptive the normalcy of “Just be kind”!
The fallenness of Adam brought in standards besides God’s.
One man’s good is now another’s pain.
Oh, who is there to teach us right from wrong?
Praise God for when full revelation came:
first, the Law, then the fulfilling power of Love.

The initial ray of eternity’s hope came
when “in the beginning God” burst on the scene,
Jesus’ pre-incarnate wishes forged in flame,
the very thought of God a natural, garden theme.

“God is”, the fuel for Heaven-invisible,
the light to ignite imagination’s muse.
Even after Eden, the flashes of “I Am” ** became preamble,
bounced off angels’ swords till Moses heard Him in the bush.***

All this glory is gathered to say “Love
is who the Lord Almighty is, all attributes stemming from!”
We cannot collect His reasonings to sum
why I Am made us for Him—just that outside of our equations,
God is Love.

I love how the Holy Spirit works through your poems, John. Thanks for sharing how you seek God when unable to sleep. Indeed, God is love and with His affection, we show others His unconditional compassion. Peace and love to you my friend!

I’m heartened by your words, Walter. A faith shared is faith (edifyingly) compared.
