  1. My attempts to show rather than tell often end up either sounding like I'm showing off or like some kind of melancholy introspection. I agree with Josi on overdoing it. I often read passages thinking "Would you get to the point already." That may be because I'm mostly a non-fiction guy. And Jeff, I've been working on a screenplay and I've been trying hard to cover some exposition in background without having awkward dialogue for it. For example, instead of talking about someone's military service, just showing a medal case and flag in background. Exposition is necessa
  2. I've got Calibre but I wasn't sure it offered much functionality in doing EPUB conversion, or at least any editing after the conversion. IngramSpark has a validation tool they recommend so I'll definitely use that. Adobe Digital Editions is a good suggestion - I'll do that too now that you mention it.
  3. Has anyone used Sigil to create EPUB files? I'm tinkering with it now and it seems like it will probably work once I figure it out, but I'm always nervous about it not looking right on some e-readers.
  4. It was brutal but it had to be done.
  5. Thanks for the advice guys. I killed the ellipses.
  6. "Eight true stories… She had two abortions… He did five years for manslaughter… She was raped in fifth grade… His mother was murdered in front of him… What they all have in common is God’s amazing grace that transformed their lives. Dr. Chris Brown shares real life stories that will challenge, inspire, and encourage believers and skeptics alike." Would you be interested in that book?
  7. That's definitely my concern on the book award - I don't want to do more harm than good with a dubious award claim. On reviews, I'm going with a more-is-better approach. I reached out to a lot of people for advance reviews - basically anybody with any kind of title: Author, Blogger, Bookstore Owner, Radio Host, Ministry Director, you name it. Only a couple will go on the actual cover obviously, but I'll use them all. And they are all supposed to promote me in their channels as well. I'll let you know in a couple months how that turns out.
  8. Question for the group: Should I put something like "From award-winning author" on the cover of my new book? I did get an Illumination Book Award gold medal for my first book, and it seems like it would be good promotion when people see the cover. On the other hand, I don't want to come across as a complete... well, you know. Big names seem to have "Bestselling author" or "Book award winner" on their covers but I'm definitely not a big name. All thoughts on the topic are appreciated!
  9. Thanks! I had a win and a couple honorable mentions with award submissions for my first book. I'm planning to submit to a couple with my new book.
  10. Someone here, not very long ago, shared a chart or a link or something that showed the breakdown of sales numbers at different price points, and almost all the sales were under about $5, and a great majority under $2. If you have something well known, or a great marketing campaign, you can probably price it however you want. I feel like a good approach is to price it something like 2/3 your print price (maybe you have a $15 paperback, so eBook can be $9.99), then mark it down often so it shows as $2.99 or whatever and people can see that it's marked down. Then you can do some of t
  11. First phone call wasn't until the 1870s; first telegraph message was 1840s but that that's not something even a wealthy person would have had in their home. So "call" would have to be in the "sent for" sense. Did I see this is happening in Boston? Boston PD wasn't officially formed until the late 1830s, so the police may not have been the first thing on anyone's mind to call. Not sure, but a wealthy person might have more likely had someone they paid for matters of security.
  12. Oh, I posted it in plugs/promos but should have put it here too. I went with the raffle of an Amazon gift card and signed copies of my first book and the new book. To sign up simply email info@childofgracebooks.com with "Sign Me Up!" as the subject. I promise not to spam you.
  13. They didn't make it easy, but I eventually found an email address... We'll see if I ever get a reply.
  14. I don't keep close tack of them either, so I have no idea how long it's been since the reviews disappeared. I've sold a few copies through them, but not many. I started a trial BookBub promotion, and for whatever reason all the click-throughs on it yesterday went to B&N, which led me to go check. Anyway, I'll have to send them an email today, but I don't have high hopes since I don't know how long it's been.
  15. I just noticed that the Barnes & Noble online listing for my book has no reviews. Previously there were a handful of reviews on there. Has this happened to anyone else? I've heard of Amazon zapping reviews (thankfully hasn't happened to me) but I've never heard of B&N doing it.
  16. A weakness is a strength overused (or so I heard in a sermon once). So the loquacious outgoing type can be a gossip. The guy who gets everything done suffers from burnout but won't slow down. The tough lady won't go to the doctor when she's ill because of pride... The other interpretation of that saying is the cliche that when all you have is a hammer every problem looks like a nail. So Accord64's pastor uses his great debate skills in every situation. That outgoing type won't stop talking even when silence is needed. The burned out workhorse thinks working harder is the solution to every prob
  17. This site has a lot of information: https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/well-good/teach-me/86945440/how-have-bed-sizes-changed-throughout-the-ages-why-has-the-double-died When I think mid-19th century, it seems like most of the museums/stately homes/historical sites I've visited had what I would consider very small beds. Even in master suites it seems like they were maybe like a modern queen size at the most. Not that helpful I know, but my gut feeling is that you're probably looking at single (or smaller!) size beds.
  18. Since you guys helped me come up with the promotional idea, I wanted to make sure you had the opportunity to enter too! My new book, Testimonies of Grace, will be released Labor Day weekend. I'm doing an email sign up list to be the first to know when the book is out - and you'll also be entered to win an Amazon Gift Card, a signed copy of Testimonies of Grace, and a signed copy of Child of Grace: A Death Row Story! Simply send an email to info@childofgracebooks.com with "Sign me up!" in the subject line. [I promise not to spam you!]
  19. This is great advice! The opening line of my first book was, "I wasn't born in jail, but I came pretty close." It was my one-line hook for a memoir. My new book is a collection of 8 testimonies, and I started each one with a climactic paragraph from the person's story, then went back to the beginning of their story. Each one starts with a paragraph-length hook. That also gave me ready-made teasers to use in marketing, so I've been giving the opening paragraph to a story along with "coming soon" posts. I've gotten pretty good responses on some of them (and surprisingly
  20. Thanks everybody! Lots of good advice here, as usual
  21. I'm thinking signed copies of my first book and this book plus an Amazon gift card.
  22. Yep, I'm pretty much sold on the raffle idea. I was briefly concerned because I live in one of 3 states where raffles are illegal, but that only applies if people have to pay for tickets.
  23. Now there's an idea! Everyone gets entered in the raffle, but I just have one thing to put in the mail.
  24. It's a collection of 8 testimonies that show different aspects of God's grace and the journey of a believer. Each testimony ends with some additional material and scripture about the topic(s) of the particular testimony. I'm calling it Testimonies of Grace (my first book was Child of Grace, and I do business as Child of Grace Books, so it sort of fits the theme). I can give you WAY more on what it's about if you're interested.
