  2. I really like the Story Embers podcasts, and the most recent one was about Plot Conflicts. In it, they discuss plots that just grab you right from the start, and those that flat, and it got me thinking--what in your stories really grabs the reader? I'd love to hear some examples!

  5. She had waited too long The dress that was white and flowing Was now stained and torn The hem ripped and stepped upon Dirty Her face once full of joy Was streaked with tears Her hair once smooth and without tangle Was now knotted and without form Her eyes once clear and full of promise Were downcast and empty Her gaze met only her feet Calloused and swollen Her heart once leapt at His thought Now beat in trepidation Her breath once eager to meet His Now caught in shallow hesitation It was her wedding day

  6. One more significant thing about the resurrection is that he conquered death, not just physical (necros) we already know he had power over that because of him raising Lazarus, but now also 'thanatos' or spiritual death or eternal separation from God. Interesting though is that the spirit or demon of death is also powerless now because of Jesus victory. He offered up his spirit and breathed one last breath on the cross and chose his moment of death, death did not take him. The resurrection then reinforces the victory and proves that death is powerless as it didn't take him, and it couldn't keep

  9. I also get ideas all the time. I flesh them out a bit in a word doc, give them a file, and stick them at the back of my computer until they're needed. I have 21 years of those files. I'm still thinking...maybe one day... Good advice: never waste your writing. Even that fantabulous stuff you've deleted should be saved. Or that character that is uber interesting but just doesn't fit. That great writing might come in handy for another project.

  14. I used to read a little sci-fi (Robert Lynn Asprin and Michael Moorcock) but my story is far from it. You'd probably like the setting. It's very clean --some have said I need to dirty up my characters more, but who'd want to go there then? My plot isn't necessarily to shove Christianity on anyone, but, hopefully, my main characters come across as Christians quickly. Chapter numbering needs work, but here's the first installment of mine and see if you'd like to take a stab at it. http://ognyen.blogspot.com/2017/08/rt-mac-story-through-chapter-5.html

  15. Johnny Hart grew up just a few miles from where I live, and he's still fondly remembered in this area. He was always very generous in donating custom comic art for use by various local parks, events, and such. Signs featuring his art can still be found all around the place. It's probably just coincidence, but it was always helpful that the initials B.C. were able to be given a double meaning with "Broome County," which is the locale in which we live...

  16. That's a good question, but I don't know if I have a good answer. I know when I'm writing I try to promise my reader either lots of mystery and action of some kind and of course I try to deliver on those promises.

  22. Yes -- the daughter of P. Padre and M. Madre would be D. Padre-Madre. When she marries, she drops her mother's last name and replaces it with her husband's, making her D. Padre-Esposo. Her children, however, will have their father's last name first, as she did before marriage, resulting in N. Esposo-Padre. So the order of her children's last names will be reversed from hers, at least in the (Latin American) Spanish-speaking countries I'm familiar with. The system is a bit ungainly, but does serve to identify the children as belonging to both families, which makes some things easier

  23. Happy Easter to everyone. On this day, our Lord Jesus rose from death. What then is the significance of His resurrection? I would want to talk about the importance of His resurrection to our Lord Jesus, then to all humankind, and finally to every believer. To our Lord Jesus, His resurrection proves that He is God. His resurrection qualifies Him to judge the world. To all humankind, it proves there will be the resurrection of all (the saved and the unsaved). Christ’s resurrection makes certain the resurrection of all humanity; those who died in sin face a fearful resurrectio

  25. A conference I attended has a Paddle Panel from the faculty. People submit their first page and someone else reads it. Then if the people on the panel like it, they hold up the green side of the ping-pong paddle. If not, it's the red. The reader read the first three sentences and a green paddle went up, followed shortly thereafter by the others. I always wondered about the rest of the page!

  28. The Paschal Homily of Saint John Chrysostom Christ is Risen! Indeed He is RIsen! Is there anyone here who is a devout lover of God? Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival. Is there anyone who is a grateful servant? Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord! Are there any now weary with fasting? Let them now receive their wages! If they have toiled from the first hour, let them receive their due reward; If any have come after the third hour, let him with gratitude join in the Feast! And he that arrived after the sixth hour, let him not doubt; for he

  29. HE HAS RISEN! HE HAS RISEN, INDEED! HE LIVES I serve a risen Savior, he's in the world today. I know that He is with me, whatever man may say. I see His hand of mercy, I hear his voice of cheer And just the time I need Him, He's always near. He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me Along life's narrow way He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart. This hymn woke me up this morning. I love the word

  34. Hey all, Can we establish/reestablish some things? 1. Everyone on here at least agrees that whether or not the Bible is a scientific document, it does display scientific truths "ahead" of it's time. 2. If I am following correctly, the issue is whether or not the Bible is a scientific document specifically. 3. Based on your last point, pale, it seems that you believe that the purpose of science is to prove God's existence. I don't wish to misrepresent. Please correct me if I'm wrong. 4. You also mention that "faith alone" doesn't seem to be enough for yo

  35. Wow, I enjoyed this poem! As Leah already said, you provided splendid imagery. I can see how you're showing me that we as the church wait and wait for so long but tend to lose hope, until one day He comes. Praise God for that day!!

  37. I really love the imagery, in this poem, and the contrasts you formed. I also liked how you never actually mentioned that it is a picture of Christ and ourselves/his church, but the reader knows.

  38. YYYESSSS!!! Look, your other stuff was good... this is very good. You know how sometimes, when you hear a tune for the first time, it just goes in a direction that kinda surprises and delights you? You're combining old things in ways that can surprise us anew. Placing fades or cuts appropriately makes the transitions as much fun as hearing the music and watching the scenes. In fact, while I'm movin' to all three of those at once, I don't seem to have enough brain cycles left over to read the text on the screen too, so I had to watch twice. (Don't worry; that's a compliment...)
