  2. I just spotted a review on one of my books (I don't have very many, about 10 total) that does a better job of describing and explaining it than I can. This is for my book called Blessings and Trials (I'm giving it away FREE next week as part of my school's summer reading program): "As a fan of Peretti's "Darkness" duology and others in the same vein like Hudson's "On the Edge" and Beale's "War in Heaven", but also a fan of Tolkien, Sanderson, Eddings, and Salvatore, among others, when I stumbled on this I was immediately excited to see a genre mash-up that took a biblic

  11. Two men were sitting under a tree. One was reading a book. The other was writing a book. A lion came by and ate the man reading the book. Why? Answer: Everyone knows that readers digest and writers cramp.

  13. I received probably the most hilarious spam email I've never opened. It's (allegedly) from Amazon, and the title reads: You got (1) package pending for delivery - Use your code to track and receive it on 6/1/1990. Wow!! That must be one special code. I can get this package delivered 30 years ago!

  14. Wow! Thanks! First, cookies for everyone. And I hereby decree that cookie calories consumed on Accord64 day do not count. Second, we'll have a legendary fireworks display. Protective glasses and fire resistant clothing strongly recommended. And there will be some thrilling aerial demonstrations. Hearing protection strongly recommended. Have a happy and safe Accord64 day!!

  15. My name is Jim Shaver, I have been married for over thirty years. I have two grown children, and three granddaughters. I am a playwright, screenwriter, filmmaker and author. My wife and I have been attending the same church in Oceanside, CA for over thirty years. We have served in many areas over the years, but primarily I oversee the theater arts ministry where I have written, and staged many sketches and plays. They have been in different genres such as spoof (A Christmas Cliche), Mystery (Diamonds, Moths, & Rust), Fantasy (Less Than Charming), and Science Fiction (a la Poursuite de Rou

  17. Here's a video from Derek Doepker on the importance of identifying your purpose for writing. (Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to insert the video, so here's the link instead). Toward the end, he issues the challenge of sharing a little of your why, and this is something I'd like to do here (once I've figured it out). Anyone else keen to join this challenge?

  19. I've been reading a slender volume that I read before my stroke, entitled, "Write Like the Masters," by William Cane. I forgot all of its teachings when I had my stroke, but I came upon this book in my shelves and I thought I would read it again, because today, like any other day, is a great day for learning. It is a compilation of writings on how to use the rhetorical device of imitation to improve out writing, going through in detail the writing of twenty diverse writers and their style. He has sampled such extremes as Balzac all the way to Edgar Rice Burroughs, Edith Wharton to Margaret

  24. So last week I came up with a beginning sentence and paragraph which works (after nineteen failed attempts), and this morning I came up with a hard Twist ending which also works. This is the very last thing that happens in the novel in the Resolution section, the very last thing the reader experiences before wondering if there will be a sequel. I dreamt the idea this morning and it's been kicking around in my head as I puttered around house in the beginning of my Christmas break. As you may know, Linda isn't a reader and doesn't care for genre stories as a general rule, so getting any

  26. I just received acceptance for a story I sent to a magazine in Australia. (How do I make this big smile not so big???) Anyway, they are requiring "non-exclusive, ongoing print and digital rights" to my story, with the first right to publish. That makes sense to me. Does it to others?

  29. I passed my test after a few reshoots. I used the max tries for the 50 foot shots and had to redo the tik tac shoot around the barricade. I called the place where I was originally scheduled to test and they are sending me a refund for the $100 I paid for test that cancelled when everything closed. So now I am not out an extra $100 for testing.

  33. I'm gonna try to look in a different direction here... I think that every day of our lives can be a day of growing, improving, and becoming something that we've never been before. That means if I look back at my old writing and don't see trash, it means I haven't grown. It means i haven't developed. It means I've wasted the years that have passed since I wrote the piece. Our time here is precious, and short; I don't want to waste a bit of it. If we are truly growing, then life will be one unending series of mid-course-corrections, and that's as it should be.
