“There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among the nations, bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves. Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.” (Luke 21: 25-27)
The coming of the Kingdom of God, the Bible shows will be preceded by major physical signs, including eclipses, earthquakes, and roaring seas. Besides widespread wars, famines, and persecution of Christians, in recent years, the world has witnessed massive earthquakes and raging seas. There have been massive earthquakes like the one which hit Haiti in 2010, and raging seas like the tsunami which hit Asia in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina which hit America in 2005. In recent days, we have witnessed major roaring seas in the forms of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.
The raging sea and subsequent flooding carry special prophetic significance related to the manifestation of the Kingdom of God. It is as if when the deluge comes, it sets the very stage by which the Kingdom of God will be revealed. In modern parlance, the deluge creates the conditions for the kingly power of God to manifest, or God’s reign on earth to begin. God coming to rule the earth through the Messiah will be first demonstrated by taming the raging seas and gathering up the flood cyclones, hurricanes, and tsunamis have caused. This truth is presented in Ps. 29 and Ps. 93, as well as in Is. 59:19.
Psalm 29: This psalm speaks about the immense power of the spoken word of God. The declaration of the Word of God does wonders; it has the power to impact and transform Nature. What is not possible to the natural man in taming or manipulating Nature is possible to the Church through the spoken Word of God. God reveals His ultimate power in taming the raging power of the waters. God enters into His kingdom rule when the Church exercises the power to control Nature. Through His church God will tame Nature. The coming songs of worship in the Church will reflect such powers of God; our songs will highlight this power of God revealed through us.
Psalm 93: This Psalm is more pertinent about the relationship between the revelation of the Kingdom and the sea storms. The messianic age begins as when God’s power is revealed that has the ability to stabilize the world by taming the raging sea storm. It is in the midst of raging seas that the Messiah is revealed. The sign that the messianic age has begun is to notice how God exercise direct control over the raging storm – hurricanes and cyclones. We know so far that in the face of sea storms — which can fly at the speed of 185 miles per hour — mankind has little power of control. The best man can do is to heed governmental officials dire warnings about evacuation. People can flee incoming storms, but cities often become sitting ducks for raging destructive hurricanes.
Isaiah 59: 16-21: God says both the east (i.e., Asia) and the west (i.e., the Americas) will be troubled by roaring seas. The fear of God will strike the hearts of people. But God in the face of the coming flood promises to reveal the power of His Word that can still the storm and re-build the devastated earth. (cf. Is. 51: 15-16)
It appears that the coming of the Kingdom of God is inaugurated when the church starts exercising power over hurricanes and cyclones through the spoken word of God. When the church starts to demonstrate God’s power in giving order to Nature and Nature obeys, then we say the Kingdom Age has begun.
