A song-dialogue-argument beween Pietro Bernardone (father of St. Francis) and the rogue saint/son ("Frankie"):

Father: FRANKIE, YOU CAN'T JUST GO "ZIG-ZAG" --

AFTER TWELVE HUNDRED YEARS, SAY THE GOSPEL'S "THIS WAY"

OR THAT! GET IN LINE: YOUR GAME IS A ZERO SUM!

THINK ABOUT IT, LEAVE IT TO MAGISTERIUM!

SO PLEASE TELL ME--HAVE WE A SHADE OF A HERETIC?

COME ON SON--TELL ME QUICK, QUICK, QUICK!

Frankie: FATHER I--

Father: WHAT?

Frankie: I--REALLY DON'T HAVE MUCH TO SAY!

Father: (HAH! THAT'S A SWITCH)

Frankie: JUST POVERTY, OBEDIENCE AND CHASTITY !

Father: YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!

Frankie: BUT WHAT I'VE SAID WILL SURELY HELP SOMEONE--NO DOUBT!

Father: THESE HANDS ARE WHAT WILL BUILD A CHANGE.

Frankie: WHAT IF HATE CHOKES OUR LIVES AWAY?

Father: THIS CHEST HAS MOTIVES TO BE STRONG.

Frankie: THIS HEART IS WHERE CHRIST'S LOVE BELONGS.

Frankie: NO I AM NO HERETIC!

Father: SON--BUT YOU TEAR DOWN . . . WHAT MAKES US TICK!

Frankie: THERE IS NO INTENT.

Father: WELL--WHAT OF CHURCH, FAMILY AND GOVERNMENT?

Frankie: THESE SHOULD MODEL LOVE!

Father: NO ROOM FOR MONEY! OH DEAR--[Francis makes a caution

gesture to Don Bernardone--like "shhhhh" to supress his

father's cursing] AHHHH!

Frankie: I DID NOT SAY A MERCHANT HAS NO HOME!

Father: WITH AN EMPTY PURSE, MIGHT AS WELL BE NONE!

Frankie: DON'T WORRY, FATHER. MAKE A PROFIT, STAY!

Father: WHAT?

Frankie: WHAT GRACE!

Father: HOW?

Frankie: HOW BLESSED!

Father: FRANKIE, WE GO NOW OUR SEPARATE WAYS!

Frankie: BUT TO SERVE--NOT AS ENEMIES!

Father: I DON'T SEE HOW SAINT DAMIAN SURVIVES. [more ? than !]

Frankie: AS THE BRICKS--WE'RE ALWAYS ALIVE!

Father/Frankie: [together, but each angling to demonstrate his worldview]

SUCH . . . IS . . . LIFE!
