This is something new that I have recently discovered that I think is something the church needs to pay more attention to. I was having a conversation with a family member recently about my views and beliefs, and she mentioned in passing that she doesn't believe in Jesus or follow Him but instead is involved in something she referred to as 'benevolent wicca'. This got my attention. I have heard talk about the emergence of the occult in many parts of the country, but it has never really come on the radar for me until we had this conversation.
So, I began to think about all of this, and then I visited a friend's home, and His house is decorated with all sorts of Harry Potter inspired themes. He has young children, and then the lights came on for me. I wondered 'how much has books and movies like Harry Potter influenced young people's thinking about witchcraft, the occult, and magic in general? So I did a google search and discovered that these books and movies have had a very strong influence, especially over millennials, who no longer see 'magic' and 'sorcery' as evil, but have become desensitized to it, and many have embraced it as a form of 'personal empowerment' and as an alternative to mainstream religion as a whole. That lead me to this unbelievable discovery. If you have not heard of this then google 'Witchtok'. Here is a quote from google Gemini about this subgroup found on tik tok
"WitchTok is a massive subculture on TikTok where creators share videos about modern witchcraft, magic, spirituality, spells, tarot, and crystals, offering education, community, and entertainment. It's a diverse space for both experienced practitioners and beginners ("baby witches") to learn, share practices, and connect, though it also faces issues with misinformation and commercialization. The trend involves everything from aesthetic witchy decor and DIY potions to deep discussions on Pagan traditions, attracting billions of views and creating a significant online spiritual community. "
There are literally billions of views, and as of this morning 9.3 million posts on this channel. UNBELEIVABLE!
This is not what I expected to find at all. This is shocking and I am still trying to wrap my head around this. What I think has happened is because mainstream media has produced all of these shows like harry potter, charmed, and Sabrina the teenage witch, this has made witchcraft and sorcery something that no longer viewed as something demonic or evil, and turned it into something that is harmless and ok to explore.
Hollywood has rebranded sorcery and magic for people into something that it is not, harmless! The internet has also created virtual spaces for people to gather and to share and this is also a problem. It's like a perfect storm, its happening under our noses, and worst of all, I hear very little talk about it. I only found it because I was curious and started searching to see if what I was wondering was true, and lo and behold, there is a ton of this stuff online. Let us remember this,
' For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim (household good luck images)..."
1 Samuel 15:23 AMPC
I'm going to pray about this and encourage anyone who reads this to do the same. I've said it before and I will say it again; our country needs a major revival if we are going to get things back on track. I think those of us in the Church are living in a bubble, and I don't think we really understand all that is happening around us sometimes. Now more than ever we need to the truth of the Gospel to become more mainstream, but it feels like our culture is losing its grip on the truth. This cannot be a good thing. We really need revival!
