Supernatural, fantasy and occult
Hello, I'm new here. I'm a playwright.
As a believer, is it wrong to write fiction that deals in the supernatural, fantasy and/or the occult? I've always had a fascination with this world, but only as intriguing story-telling.
I feel at though it may be a betrayal against God if continued to entertain some of these ideas in my stories. In one play, I have a psychic/medium that goes into a "neitherworld" where a young man is trapped by the illusions of excitement and seduction. She gets him to accept the reality that he must let it go and go to his peace. I've grown as a Christian and so while I like the story, I don't feel as comfortable telling it because of the psychic and lost soul angle.
I know J.R.R. Tolkien of Lord of the Rings fame, but I'm not certain that I can consider him.
I would appreciate any advice or feedback. Thank you very much.
Blessings,
LZR

That's all I write....and I don't think there is any problem with it. It is, after all, fiction.

I think in a lot of ways it comes down to whether you are portraying evil as good, or as evil.

But in a sense evil should be portrayed as tempting and a quick, easy solution, ultimately leading to condemnation. While following the truth is very difficult and slow-going, but ultimately leads to life. So if a writer makes sin anything less than desirable (to begin with) they aren't being true to the story or the nature of evil.
Lazarusrizing, personally I think those genres are the ones most suited to exploring the Christian world-view in contrast to the pagan. Definitely know your limits when it comes to writing what you were talking about (after all the occult world is very real and not to be trifled with) and don't cause yourself to stumble. But in the end it is fiction. Know yourself, know God, consult the Holy Spirit. I don't see a problem with it. Your Christian world-view will shine through all the same.

Thank you InkSlinger and everyone for your comments. They bring me some peace on the matter.
To tassieboy:
I have always cared about showing evil as evil. But I fear that the original idea of the psychic/medium who comes to pull this young man out of this delusional hell, and then leading him "into the light" so to speak may be misleading.
To Warrior 4 Jesus:
I also think those genres are well-suited to the Christian world-view. I assure you that I do not take lightly the occult world. In recent months, I have been doing casual research of secret societies and their affiliation to the occult. What I discovered shook me so that my faith in Jesus Christ deepened and solidified. I couldn't believe all the deceptions put into play in our society and I had been blinded by it (I suspect also that J.R.R. Tolkien may have been a mason). Hence, so much of my former views have changed. So I fear that this play may encourage faith in psychics, mediums and spirit-communications. I assure you that is not my intention. It is about one young man unable to let go of the past and so he takes shelter among shadows. He is dead and he doesn't realize it.
I do like the story, even if I am unsure. I do NOT ever want to dishonor God with my work, and I don't want to be viewed as pro-occult. Whatever further feedback you can give will be appreciated.
Thank you.
