I reviewed the Lulu threads here, and spent a bit of time at their site. I have a question, though, for those that have published through them...do you have to have a publishing house imprint on your work? I seem to recall somebody stating that Lulu does not imprint their name on your work, but I know of other "self-publishing" venues that do put their name on there. If you are publishing a work completely on your own, do you have any type of imprint? What I mean by "imprint" is a publishing house name of some sort. Or do you start your own company or leave it off entirely? I went the P.O.D. route before, but with another company, and they did place their name on there.
Thanks.

You can put anything, any imprints on the book you like, because you are formatting the cover and the pages. Just include the imprint when you submit the copy.

Can you insert graphics into the Word file you upload?

To insert graphics you will need to load a "pdf" file.
You can see the graphics I loaded in to my last book "Psalm Stories" by going to www.lulu.com/gloriouswriters and click on the book cover and then the preview file. I designed my own cover as well. That is another process, but it can be done.
If you don't have a PDF maker you can obtain a number of free programs. I use PRIMO PDF. You can find this program by googling "PRIMO" PDF.
Have fun!

For yours, are you putting anything like that on there at all, or just using your name (or pen name)? The reason I ask is because I don't have any sort of publishing "house" or small company behind what I want to publish. It's just me, so the only thing on there would be my name. I'm just wondering if the general public would pay attention to a lack of a "publishing house" name on there, whether it is big or small.

you don't need a pdf maker for LULU, if you upload a file there from wp or mswp it will be converted...its really easy...

brotherdave,
i am a new writer. am finishing my first book and am considering lulu.com as well. my book is a secular one that mentions God's goodness to the main character in the end--don't want to be self-righteous sounding. i am hoping that i could publish my book and get bought in order for me to support myself and be able to go back to my family again.
my question is: since the time you published your Psalm Stories at lulu.com, would you mind sharing if financially it is somehow rewarding? i ask this general question as i'm avoiding to ask you how much sales your book generated so far?--don't have to answer this latter question.
thanks and God bless.

Don't write because you expect it to support you financially, write because you love to and you can't not write.

I really haven't begun to market my books yet, so I can't really answer your question. Sorry. Wity LULU you are your own, unless you buy into one of their marketing programs. I haven't tried any of them yet.

Thanks anyway for replying...
It will be interesting to see how long Lulu can sustain its current business model (offering to put your work online for free and then splitting profits). Even 1stBooks (now Authorhouse) eventually started to charge "channel fees" just to keep your work online or in their system...$20 per year I think. I think I'll give Lulu a shot, though and post back with my results at some point.
