Prayers are welcome; I don't do luck either. But I will accept all the prayer I can get.

I have been accepted as a regular columnist here on ChristianWriters.com & a lot of my poetry has been published on Crossway Publications at christianpoetry.org. Both are non paying, but thats not the most important thing to me.

I've been lucky enough (well...God's gift to me, actually) to have published a single poem "In Your Eyes, I See Myself", but it gave me a taste of what I feel He wants me to do.

Too bad I've looked the other way for too long. It's been wonderful this past year, discovering His path for me again, and finding it seems to include writing....at least for myself if not for full-on publishing!!!

Hope for the Future

I woke up
In the night,
As I'm not oft to do.
And started bouncing ideas
Off my pillow,
As how to answer you.
I could count my successes
One by one,
But count my published words not.
Then God intervened
And bailed me out,
And helped me to think as I ought.
In a scripture I call my own
God showed His humor and care.
How could I not write it down?
How then could I not share?

Psalms 138:8 (Revised)
The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me.
Thy mercy O Lord, endureth forever.
Forsake not the works of mine own hands.

(Replaced "thine with "mine" for personalized
"Writer's Prayer".)

God is good, all the time.

I'm new here, so hi everyone. Even to submit work on this site and be successful you are being "published." Your article or story is read by at least hundreds every day. Likewise if you have your own web site (I have three or four) your work will be read in parts of the world you never dreamed of.
Of course if some national magazine publishes your work and pays you for it, so much the better. Until then, if you have something meaningful to say, the internet gets you read.

Okay, here's my favorite.

My brother in law asked me to develop a class on HTML for his computer training company. As I researched the subject, I concluded two things: one, HTML was very easy to learn, and two, most of the books on the subject were very difficult to understand. I continued to develop the course material and then began to notice how much my material resembled a book outline.

Even though I'm primarily a fiction writer, on a whim, I decided to send query letters to about 12 computer book publishers, suggesting a book on HTML that was written by a "non-technical" writer. In other words, a book that regular people could read and understand.

When I mailed off my letters, I told my wife, "I've got to get these in the mail quickly, so I can get my rejection letters."

Then we left for a week of vacation.

When we came back, I found a DHL overnite express package on my front porch, and I could tell by the weight that it was a book. When I opened it, it contained a book titled "How to Do Everything with FrontPage 2000," an Osborne/McGraw-Hill title. Since at that time I didn't even have a copy of FrontPage 2000, I knew I hadn't ordered the book. I reached back inside the package to see if there was a packing slip, and instead pulled out a personal letter from Osborne's acquisition editor. He said that they liked my idea and were interested in the book for their "How to Do Everything" series. If I could write a proposal and design my sample chapter to fit their specs, they might be interested.

I did and they were and the rest is history.

Moral of the story? Have a crazy idea for a book or feel like sending a query out on a whim? Go for it. You never know who might be interested.

Jim
