I ended that with a question mark because I had a question for all of you. American Book Publishing has offered me a contract. Are any of you familiar with this publisher? I have to give a (refundable) deposit in order to publish with them bcause I am a new author. I just want to know from you folks if these people are ok. The last time I "published" a book was with Publish America and I don't want to be burned again.

These two sites are the best for checking out this publishing company before you sign anything!!
Preditor and Editors (http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/)
Writers Beware (http://www.sfwa.org/beware/)

I add my voice of agreement to Dr Rita, and can't think of a less melodramatic way to say that. Seriously, checking them out at those two sites is the best thing you can possibly do.

Writers Beware has a warning about American Book Publishing.

Their 'refundable deposit' sounds shady to me. Why would a real publishing company ask for any money at all?

Quite honestly, if they are asking for money from you, they aren't a real publisher. They are a vanity press, and you can probably find cheaper and better ways to self publish.

I checked out their website, and it looks like they are a self-publishing service just like a thousand others. Doesn't seem to be anything special about them, good or bad.

What kind of problem did you have with Publish America?
