What genre do you like writing most, and why?

I voted "other," for historical fiction, which is what my NaNo novel is. It's one of my first ventures into fiction, so I don't have much of anything to compare it to, but I would have to say, based on this project, that this genre is my fav.

I love the research...I've always been a research freak.

And there's something so compelling about making history come to life, and getting lost in a whole different time.

Nifty poll, Rebecca. !thumbsup!

I picked "other"...but that is because I like to write literary/suspense novels & short stories. I typically like to write an adventurous plot with an entirely different symbolic/metaphoric level running beneath it. Basically, so you can read the stories two different ways.

I picked other as I like historical novels (non-western). I think that's what my nano is going to be. I'm not sure though

I picked romance since all the books I've written and started have some element of it.

I put Sci-fi/fantasy. But when I was a kid I loved mysteries and war stories, and my favorite movies are action/adventure and suspense/thriller. So naturally the series I am writing is a Christian supernatural mystery fantasy suspense thriller with a big war near the end. With a brief detour into horror (had to slip in at least one exorcism) - or at least horrible writing! And it has horse rustlers. (I collected Western comics, too.)

I guess I suffer from a case of genre confusion.

- Paul

(Alright - I admit it! The villain has a cloaking device! I couldn't help myself. A little sci-fi never hurt anyone...)

I love it!!!

I picked other, though I guess I could have gone with YA, but I love writing picture books! Very fun (not counting all the editing and making every word count so it's perfect...)!!

Westerns by far. As to the why -

1. I've slept ate and breathed the western on TV and in print all my life - it's just an extension of me.
2. In a western, the land is almost like another character and an integral part of the story - and reflects the characters in the story.
3. While westerns are not, in general, usually written with a Christian slant, my favorite westerns are about characters who take the high road - who meet one struggle after another yet strive to live by the high standards they have set for themselves. Or more simply, living by "The Code". They don't always suceed and things may turn out badly but you respect them for their efforts.
4. Horses were the main means of transportation.
5. I should have been born in the 1800's. But since that wasn't the plan, I just write about my favorite time period instead.

If I had to pick a secondary genre it would be the...well, I don't know - what are books like The Bourne Identity considered? Thriller/suspense?

I had to pick suspense/thriller since that's what I aspire to write. I think mystery can fall under that category.

No, wait  All the others could fall under suspense/thriller, right?

I need something that's fast-paced when I'm reading and feel the same when I'm writing. BUT! I think you can weave other elements into suspense/thrillers in a satisfying way.

Okay, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Blessings, Francine

Children's picture books. To me YA is something for tweens or older children. I mostly enjoy writing for 5-9 age range.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy!thumbsup!

Why? Anything can happen!
Read a story once where the land was an actual 'person' and a grumpy old one at that. Elves and cyborgs storming the goblin kings fortress on dragons with laser cannons!:D

I like horror too but it tends to pull me down, so I only toss parts in here and there.!thumbsup!
{unintentional pun}

God Bless!

I enjoy writing non-fiction because I love the idea of someone reading my stuff and saying, "Wow, I didn't know that life could be that great! That God could really, truly love like that!"
Ya Know? That my little words and musings could change a life! That is so amazing to me. But I know it is possible because I have seen it happen in myself again and again. So why not be one of the ones to spread the joy?

Non-fiction, short stories; in the same way we learn fom Jesus parables, the most sinple message paints a picture in my mind that I must put into words. Choosing to follow Jesus gave everything significance, and when the Lord gives me a message I must share it, I must write it down.

Fiction is my favorite genre because God uses it to bring true to life situations, solutions and other things to the light that people can read and be touched and inspired by.

Okay, so I am aware they do not view themselves as young, something that will become clearer to them as they mature into ancient status! Seriously, Grace Livingston Hill had a profound effect on my young life and I truly desire to write books as she did in a way that makes the bible a living breathing document that is still relevent to kids of today. I worked for almost 20 years as a restasturant manager, off & on -- and believe, kids to day truly need to see the reality of God in their lives.

I really enjoy writing fantasy, because, even if the story isn't necessarily a Christian story, you can still communicate morals and ethics in another context to real life, also, it is quite a popular genre nowadays and that is a great opportunity to share the gospel through it.

I too, also like to write non-fiction. I am working on a book for Mother's currently and a sister book to the one published earlier this year.
I began to notice things differently after our son was diagnosed with Autism. I began to try and view the world through his eyes and God has been showing me and teaching me some challenging things.

I read Terry Brook's Shannara Series when I was in high school and I was hooked into the fantasy/scifi genre. But now I am leaning to reading mainly Christian based Fantasy and SciFi since the genre is growing.

When I write, I write Christian based fantasy and SciFi that can cross over between Christian and mainstream readers without hiding the religion in an allegory.

I enjoy writing suspense/thrillers, although they usually morph into some kind of romance. I'm currently working on a novel... it's not a suspense, and it's not a romance... I'm just not sure what the heck it is!

I picked other.
I have written several completed children stories that I read to my sons and am writing an adult novel that has a mix of drama/thriller/romance to it. My first attempt with adult lit. and have been enjoying it.
I also have written lots poetry as well. I usually allow God to direct me in the way of my writing and when I feel comfortable I continue with my work:)

Why SciFi? As a kid in the library I first picked up some books by Robert Heinlein becasue of what i thought were cool looking covers and dust jackets -- I was hooked. Since then I have read everything from Asimoz to Zelazney and really enjoy the military sci-fi sub genre best.

I chose SUSPENSE/THRILLER from the point of view of a reader - I just love to see how unlikely things or situations become resolved - I enjoy the inventiveness of it.

I'll weigh in with my pole selection as other because I too write for children - picture books with 'reality roots'. But I also write music (some for children) and poetry. Most of it celebrates God the creator, God the Saviour, or the love of The Lord in some way. Once in a while I join the conversation on the editorial page.
Bless you,

I'm not sure what context you speak of when you ask about the meaning of 'cur'. I think it was used as a epitaph on a soldier's tomb like "Horse and Cur". Webster's says it is a mongrel dog or if speaking of a person, a worthless fellow.

I read the Terry Brook's Shanara Series in high school, too! And still like them, though I've fallen behind in reading them. My favorite author would have to be Tolkien. I have a fascination with dragons and elves, so I write a lot about those races. I really enjoyed reading Christopher Paolini's books Eragon and Eldest as well as many many others.

Hi,
Christian/YoungAdult is the writing field for me. My own teen age years were unhappy and for a way to escape from this world, I read a lot of Christian books. it was these books that helped get me through a difficult time. Because of these books I knew I wanted to write Christian books for youth. I felt there were some out there I could help through difficult times. And through THE ASQUINN SERIES which I write, I am doing this.

I like writing non-fiction. Iam a real people-person and there are so many situations experienced by people that you would never run out of ideas. After all, it is easier when you have all the details without using your imagination. Readers tend to be attracted to 'slice of life' stories. I would also like to write childrens' stories and some more poetry.

I picked "other," though I maybe could have gone with "young adult." I don't like writing for teenagers though, which is what I think of that term as referring to. Nonfiction for children in the 9-12 age range is my favorite thing to write, and I'd like to attempt picture books as well.

Why? Because there is so much in the world to discover and I love to discover it and then share that joy of discovery with children. Nature and science are my favorite topics.
