Exo 20:2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Exo 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Exo 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Exo 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

I caught a few minutes of a "Grace to You" broadcast this week. Pastor John Macarthur was talking about the ten commandments. I only heard what he had to say about the first four, but it was good. Here is what he said, and my considerable amplifications.

He said the first commandment was about loyalty. Love is loyal, and we should be loyal to God, because he is loyal to us.

He said the second commandment was about faithfulness. God does not value worthless things more than his children. We should be faithful to him, just as he is faithful to us.

He said the third commandment was about reverence. I don't like it when my children insult each other, or me. I especially don't like it when one says, "Mommy said it was Okay," and she really didn't. What I do like is when I come home from work and hear the delirious cries of "Daddy's home!" erupting from my three year old's super charged lungs. When was the last time you were breathless and said with unfeigned excitement, "God is in this place!"

And lastly, he said the fourth commandment was about intimacy. My wife often tells me how she wishes we could spend more time alone together. My daughters are constantly begging for more time - stories, trips to the park, anything to be with their dad. The sabbath law's God's one big plea, "Won't you spend some time with me?"

I don't see any God but ours creating laws whose sole intent is that we all spend time with him like a family. If you aren't feeling that today, I hope you remember HE is, and he misses you. :)

Yes, Paul,

Just yesterday evening in church, our speaker spoke from Psalm 91. He showed the importance and the need of spending time with God. God protects those who "dwell in the secret place of the most High".
How can we be Christlike without spending much time with him?
Good thoughts, Paul.

Thanks,
Ellenjames

Thanks Paul, that was indeed a word or encouragement. Sometimes I get so involved in a story or writing or . . . that I don't spend enough time with God. He is undoubtedly the best and only real friend I have. He is truly awesome in all aspects of the word.

It sounds like a powerful message!

FYI, at the Grace to You website, you can search for transcripts (http://www.gty.org/broadcast/broadcast_transcript.php)...you might see if this one is posted there to read.
