Hi Everyone,

I just found out about this project today. I sent off my poem, "Hurricane to Hope" for consideration. Please review the information below to see if it is something that you may want to assist with. Let me know what you decide.

Thank you for your ongoing friendship. God bless.

Karen

Subject: KATRINA POETS~!

Welcome!
This is the first attempt to group the very first of the Katrina poets! THANK YOU for trusting in this unusual and probably unprecedented project! Your belief in poetry and in its ability to change the planet...and your gift of WORDS enables such a dream!
I will be updating you as time goes by. As you know, our deadline is OCTOBER FIRST for poem submissions. Please feel free to spread the project far and wide! Let fellow poets know about this. If you visit a shelter ANYWHERE, please pass the word along. For those as industrious as I, consider bringing what I call a poetry KIT to a shelter. This consists of a pack of loose leaf paper (dirt cheap now) and pencils (ditto!)...a flyer with the CALL FOR POEMS and e mail address for submission. Remind poets to include NAME and PLACE at time of Katrina's impact. Mention the deadline and ask if there are COMPUTERS at the shelter that can be used to submit the poems of evacuees. (Being a veteran English teacher, I include directions for simple poetry types...like haiku, tanka, common measure, etc. but DO let them know that FREE VERSE is fine.)
Special thanks to ALAINE BATES who called me one night and read her poem, KATRINA'S PRAYER, which inspired this project. Also, to CHER COUVILLION JEANSONNE, who found the perfect connection...JUDY GINSBURG, Arts and Health Care Director at The Arts Council in Alexandria, who has offered to help facilitate the publication! I will telephone conference with her MONDAY, September 19th about dreams and details.
The issue of RELEASE FORMS has arisen, and we are now collecting mailing addresses of the poets. I do realize this could border on the impossible, as we receive poems from some who are displaced and possibly only have a shelter address to offer. Faith, faith...we can do this! If I found a way to save two cats locked in the New Orleans home of a very tearful pet loving evacuee at a poetry reading in Natchitoches, then trust that all things are possible! (And I never saw Suzie Lyons in my life!)
Some have asked if this project will raise funds for Katrina victims in any way. The answer is YES. However, we hope that it will address the larger problem of poverty of America, and the exact details have yet to be discussed. But, a portion of any money raised by a successful publication will indeed be set aside for the purpose.
Others have asked if people will be able to buy copies. YES! We hope to do a PRINT ON DEMAND publication, however, Pelican Press and others may first be contacted before that happens. We also hope to ADVERTISE the publication and even have some type of creative book signing events around the state...or who knows...maybe around the nation! We will see. Believe that I will let you know what I find out as we move forward with Katrina's Poems. I am thrilled it has come THIS far!
Take care and feel free to e mail me with any questions or comments or creative ideas. I hope that this will be a JOYFUL celebration of gifts...a therapeutic experience...and even something that comes from who knows where to accomplish who knows what!
Best Always!
Patti
