View Full Version : Quiet?

Hmm... I've found that if there's any sort of noise to distract me, I have a lot of trouble writing. So I've found myself driving away to a quiet place to go write, and that works alright for me. Does anyone else need it to be pretty much absolutely quiet to be able to write? I have almost the same thing for reading, I need it to be pretty much quiet in order to actually comprehend the words, otherwise I find myself distracted by people talking. Or even music is pretty distracting for me, unless it's like classical or something with no singing...

Absolutely. I write at night after everyone else is asleep. I have to submerge myself in the work to get the emotional depth I want. You're invited to come and read chapter one --"The Mask," in the fiction thread, and let me know if my night-time trip is working or not? (grin) Please visit my blog if you have time?

I used to be able to write with the TV on, but lately I've found it too distracting. I know many people write to mood music, but that's never worked for me. It hurts my head! Silence seems to work best.
Now, if I can only find a quiet place in my house to write... :D

That's been my problem. But now I've been finding out why parks exist... and it's really nice to get out and see God's beauty too, I had a combo quiet time and writing time this afternoon and it was really nice... sitting in the shade with a cool, revitalizing breeze washing over me. Yeah, that's God's beauty in action... then afterward I stopped at Staples to get a new binder and notebook and a couple pens. (I'm used to typing out my stories but as I've tried to make more time to write I've realized that I just can't concentrate on my work in this heat or with all the noises in the house... and unfortunately I don't have a notebook computer.)

Quiet! We're writing! Davenporter, you are right. I can't think with too many other activities going on around me. I don't use any music when I write, though probably classical orchestra music would not interfere.
What I really have to watch is interruptions! I must be kind to someone who wants to talk to me when I'm writing, but it really breaks my flow of ideas. Maybe that is just my problem.
Yes, quiet really helps me when I write. !thumbsup!

No kidding!!! That's the WORST thing for quiet times, especially. If I'm in the middle of reading something intense or in intense study and someone barges into my room (which happens WAAAAAAAY too much), it just ticks me off to no end. With writing, it's even worse, I can't even start if there are people talking. I actually did manage once with really loud music but it was hard tuning all the excess noise out.

I need things calm and quiet- It's hard to let my mind get to that 'place'- you know, where you can integrate your ideas into the right words, when there is a lot going on around me. I like coffee shops with wireless access- or home when nobody is there. I am always surprised by the stillness...

I'm not one for much noise anyhow. I like music, but in short spurts. I know several people who play different music according to what they're writing, but all I end up doing is not writing and singing along instead. LOL!
I have to write in snatches, primarily outside the house, like on the bus or on my breaks and lunch hour, and in those cases usually do so in the hospital cafeteria - THAT kind of noise I can handle - a generalized mass murmur. What I hate, however, is when I have to use our employee lounge. It's usually perfectly quiet when I go in because I eat lunch early - but then somebody just has to come in and either turn on the infernal soap operas or start babbling with someone. That specific kind of racket I just can't seem to tune out and just end up frustrated for my trouble.

If I'm in a writing mode, nothing in the world can disturb it. With 5 kids, I learned long ago to adapt to any situation. Music helps if it's agreeable to my senses. The quiet is the best way, but I adapt pretty easily to anything that comes; if I'm into a really good mode of inspiration. :)

I need quiet for my best work, but can only get it late at night or very early in the morning. To compensate, if I have the time but not the quiet, I work on mechanical things, like proofing, writing down brief ideas, reformatting, etc. Then when the quiet comes I do not have to waste it on the more mundane tasks.

I not only need complete silence while I'm writing, but I also need quiet in my soul to hear the Spirit's promptings and whisperings. When my life is too busy and chaotic, I'm completely unable to write.

Yes I like and prefer quiet but with a wife and six kids it's rare.
I don't require much sleep, six hours tops, so I get my quiet time late at night and still get up early and chase the others out of their beds and into the day.
For the real thinking stuff I need quiet but for the mundane it's not needed.
Well it's 11:30pm and time to do some thinking. !thumbsup!
God Bless!

I usually have to crank up some music just to drown out all the random, arbitrary noises that distract me. There's something soothing about a familar CD, it's like it embraces my mind and keeps all the bad stuff from distracting me.
Now, that said, if you go to the local sporting goods store or the local gun store or the local industrial supply store or even to the local pharmacy, you shouldn't have much trouble finding 32 db dampening earplugs. I just bought a pack for $2, I think Wal Mart has 6 pair for $1.50. They dampen enough you can crack off a .45 or even a .338 ultra mag all day long and your ears won't be ringing when you're done. Needless to say, they help create quiet if you can't find it any other way.

Soooo...if I'm writing and I get shot, I'll feel it but not hear it. Was that your point, Bill? :D :p

Sometimes certain songs inspire what I write and that can include loud noisy music. Back in the day I used to go to rock, punk, and metal concerts(Others also.) . It was always so loud and noisy, when ever I wanted to leave and was unable to do so I would simply concentrate on something else, even if it meant trying to talk with God in my thoughts. At times I would just go in a far corner or to the nearest light and begin to write.
Sometimes it's as though I'm still going through a transition time, I don't listen to the things I used to listen to, now it seems either soft accoustic things, or simply nothing at all.
Silence is always the best but a little noise can help too.
