I was sitting in my room praying for my son and my daughter walked in. There are many times I pray aloud, but as a child I was at times ashamed someone would hear me and say I was not praying properly. Anyway, my daughter said to me, "Ma, you are such a Jesus freak."
A flood of emotions washed over me, the biggest of which was confusion. Both of my children have been brought up to believe in the plan of Salvation and daily devotions, prayer, and thankful always. But here she was calling me a Jesus Freak, so I told her yes I was. My husband became angry and yelled at her, which in turn I took his anger and became angry as well but not with her. I may have been wrong, but I felt she needed to be talked with not screamed at. It goes against what I was doing in the first place, praying for peace within my family.
She replied she was only teasing and ran off crying. I was still angry at the husband, I pray for him to believe. We have only been married a couple of years and his tone was just wrong. We have talked about the bible, biblical teachings and I share with him passages from Gen. to Rev. He has had no formal teachings although he said he has, but I was sure he had not when he told me that Jesus prayed at Mount Rushmore...
I do not make fun of him, but I do correct what he believes to be true. I tried to explain to him that you never talk of God out of anger, because it is not emotionally healthy. It is ok for her to say that Jesus freak, because she had on a hat that said "Jesus is my homeboy", it is only a way of talking. Had it been years ago it would be something different.
I think I handled the situation terribly. I pray still for confusion to leave this family and replace with peace and tranquility.
DISREGARDING GOD’S WORD CREATES CONFUSION.
The Pharisees added hundreds of their own petty rules and regulations to God’s holy laws, and then they tried to force people to follow these rules. These men claimed to know God’s will in every detail of life. There are still religious leaders today who add rules and regulations to God’s Word, causing much confusion among believers. It is idolatry to claim that your interpretation of God’s Word is as important as God’s Word itself. It is especially dangerous to set up unbiblical standards for others to follow. Instead, look to Christ for guidance about your own behavior, and let him lead others in the details of their lives.
Romans 7:7-25
KEY BIBLE VERSE: It seems to be a fact of life that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. (Romans 7:21)
