View Full Version : Word Count Challange!
AngelAzariah
07-14-2005, 12:29 AM
Greetings again,
_____Seeing how the other challange thread has grown so long, I thought it was time to open a new one. Same goal as before, you work all day, and post your word count here!
_____It dosn't matter if you did 50 words, 500, or 5,000, and some of us do all of those and no work at all. As for me, today I pulled off re-writing the end of chapter 19... so 1,162 is my word count for the day.
Note:
_____If you don't know how to check how many words you've edited or wrote, do the following: select the portion you worked on, click "Tools" in your word toolbar, and it should have "Word Count" in it.

Well, here I am, it's 10:30 pm and I've only written 367 words. I'm starting a new story and the beginning is always so hard for me. But at least I started. There's always tomorrow
Hisart
07-14-2005, 09:51 AM
Hi All! :D
I don't know if you guys are for real about this or not.
I started a story after last weeks chat called Graven Image, I'm up to 3670  words but I have no idea of my daily. :o I'm doing my own re-write as I go (with a little help from Merry !thumbsup! ), so how do you count that? I don't know if this is a brag board for the well seasoned or if it's meant to be an encouragement? When I write it's when the six are down and so is the sun. ;) I write till I about pass out then I go to bed. My RW is the next day. I love to write but I'm an Artist, I must create! I spend most of my time working on art and not as much time writing, how's that figure?
Oh well, that's enough of me!
God Bless!

DrRita,
_____Only 367 words for starting a new story? I tried to write a new story three days ago, and I couldn't even get past twenty words! ;) I think you did very well, but that's just my openion I guess, it's only an openion. :p
Hisart,
_____I'm pretty seriuse about this challange. I don't compare myself to others counts, so it's not a matter of braging. Jones almost wops everyones bud every day on count. The point is to be acountable for your tallents.
_____There are some people here that I'm thrilled to see do fifty words worth of work per week. Let's face it, poetry takes thought to make it good, and poetry never reaches novel lenght (or I've never seen it that long). :)
_____Anyhow, you can post how many words you edited, how many words you worte that are new, or just felowship here. The other thread got way off track for a bit, but we got back to counts pretty fast.
_____As for me, I'm in editing mode right now. I've been ripping my book in half, adding, deleteing, and what I work on for the day is my count (I don't include what I deleted as work). My goal is to clean up my first book before Christmas, and get it into some form of print before inlaws and frinds kill me.

Since you started a new thread, I closed the old one to avoid any confusion.
Oh, and I only got a measly 500 words yesterday...
David Meigs
07-14-2005, 03:28 PM
Only 88 words so far, but the day is young. DrRita, I know what you mean about writing the first chapter. I slog through them with the understanding that they will be rewritten. Chapter 1 remains in my mind until I write “the end”. Only after the novel is finished do I have a firm idea of what it ought to be.

Jones,
_____Thanks for doing that and posting your count. :)
Curmudgeon,
_____The day is young, I'm just not so sure I can even pull out a 100 words today. I nipped up my finger tips a bit, so typing is a pain. Then again, I'm putting up with it to write this. :D

_____I feel flat on my face today when it came to a word count. I had 300 or so movies to organize into new contaners, take my in laws into town (2 hour drive there and back together), watch my girls this morning, fix credit reports with two companys online!
_____So I've worked! Now I need to get Tanya in here and do an order before they demand shiping and handling because we are late. Oh and Joker needs a flea bath.
Hisart
07-15-2005, 03:39 AM
Well, I got 1623 today and that brings Graven up to 5293.

I picked up my work again tonight and ended up with a grand total of 5549 words for the day. More importantly--and I'm sure Merry will be glad to hear it--I finished the first draft of the novel I started back in February. 94,384 words worth. A long, winding road finally comes to an end.
Of course, this means a rewrite is in order. But not yet. Not until Tuesday at the soonest.
See y'all then, God willing.

Well,
it's 7:58 am Saturday and I enjoyed a sleep in. (I like to be up by 4am in case you're wondering)
I haven't started editing yet this morning, I'm busy feeding my face. :D
Yesterday I squeezed out 987 words. The day before, 534 and before that 615. These aren't the greastest counts, but I've had a child at home :D and I'm happy that I've managed this much.
Today I have the house to myself and can attack my book to my hearts content. Catch you all later. Muahahaha

_____Before you work, you should go read The Grand List of Overused Science Fiction Clichés (http://enphilistor.users4.50megs.com/cliche.htm). I got stuck reading it again, dang it Gump! It's all his falt I'm sure.

LOL Angel,
I'm not sure who you were sending to have a look at that, but I had to look, didn't I? I read one thing they said about one story line and found it so funny. I quickly backed out of there before I could get hooked into reading the lot. lol

Yeaterday was a bust! Not a word of writing did I do. But then I'm getting ready for my trip, I'm leaving on Tuesday (July 19) and still have a lot to do. But I will get in some writing this morning so I will have check back later with a word count.

whitehawke,
_____Well after reading all the red x and pig ones, I moved on with my day. It didn't go so well, more later.
Hisart,
_____I've gotten pretty good and bringing counts down -- I dear say one of the best here. Still, I don't know if you want me ripping your baby apart. :)
DrRita,
_____Sometimes a cup of jo and a lap-top are the best combinations. ;)
To all,
_____Yesterday something set me off. I ended up spending about five/six hours of yard work out of my day. This included, splitting fire wood, and cutting back black berry vines. If you don't know what black berries look like, think taller than me (I'm six foot), inch thick bases at times, and thorns a centameter long.
_____I think I just got rid of the last thorn, but I'm not sure. I've skined open several parts of my body, and I feel like I've nearly broken the bones in my hands. The biggest problem is the thumbnail sized chunk of skin I tore out of my pointer finger.
_____Anyhow, I'm healing but this has cut into my writing. On the bright side, before all that I did almost 400 words worth of work. Thankfuly, I can type with little pain or so I hope it stays that way.
DrRita
07-16-2005, 02:00 PM
Angel,
Do I know about blackberries!! We had HUGE ones in our yard in Washington. Ouch! It seemed like a never ending chore, keeping them from taking over. Some friends of mine in California would think I was nut for cutting them down. "Blackberries are so good to eat," they would tell me. Clearly they'd never tangled with Oregon/Washington blackberry bushes. You know Angel, the sad thing is that you'll have to get out there and risk life and limb to cut them back again in about a month or so  .
Sorry, I got off track. I will have to put off posting my word count until later . . . got to get to the pest control store before they close . . . I have some "friends" that need evicting..

07-16-2005, 08:37 PM
Angel,
I feel for ya! I spent over two days trying to get rid of blackberries that had grown into my front yard from my neighbors' house. Now, I only have the back to do. That is once I heal up from poison oak my dog gave me :D By the way, Dr. Rita, I'm here in Northern California, and I can honestly say that I don't care to see another blackberry vine!!! :D :D (Although, I stll like to eat blackberries :) )
Oops, sorry y'all, I just realized that this was in the writer's lounge. But, I can honestly say that through it all, I've been able to continue on with my book. I did what Azariah said and this week, I've done over 2000 words, even with the itching and being on prednizone for poison oak! Isn't God wonderful!!
AngelAzariah
07-16-2005, 11:04 PM
ellenjames,
_____Well, if you would have posted two days ago, you would have kicked my rear by 327 words. That would put you better than my class (I had a class?). ;)
edmmom,
_____Glad you're working. What's your count for today though?
To All,
_____Well I did 828 words worth of editing on my book. Then I did Hisart a favor (yeah right, I'll be lucky if I'm not spammed for this) and cut a 755 part of his story down to a 296 count. That was fun editing I guess you could say. Anyways, that would put me a bit over a thousand I think. :)
_____Maybe everyone should go and cut his work up and start counting it as work too. ;) Then again, Merry has work in there too, and I'm sure a few other people wouldn't mind having their work ripped in half (or 1/3rds in my case). :p
edmmom
07-17-2005, 01:11 AM
Angel,
Because we're trying to fix up our house to sell to move back east, I told myself I'd only write Mon-Fri. However, I couldn't resist, so today I did do 85 words this morning before going to a bridal shower, and, once I leave here, I'm going back to write some more! See how God's used you to ignite the fire in me and a bunch of others !thumbsup! Thanks :)
Hisart
07-17-2005, 03:33 AM
Well, I went at it by myself.
Gotta learn some how!

_____I did write something this morning. I lectured in the Fiction Workshop, ha-ha. Who fell victom to me? It was Curmudgeon, Merry, and Hisart. I need to get at a few more people so they can form a true mob with pitch forks! Forgot, I got at whitehawke too, but that wasn't today.
_____Should I count that wreck in my word count? I don't know. Now that I think about it, everyone has Whitehawke to blame for me coming out of the bat cave. *Snigger-snigger*

Well, counting our words written for a day is a challenge, especially if we have to deduct words on a rewrite (like Hisart had to do)! Why can't we just count the number of words we originally wrote before we edited it? Wouldn't that be fair! LOL :D

_____Zeruhmfer is a white metal. -->He pulled a necklace holding a slender, inch long gem from under his shirt. Its blood red, almost black color contained veins of lighter hues. The gem burned from within, but it gave no light and he fidgeted with it.<-- Right from the first chapter. At this point his cloths are pretty much just black rags.
_____-->“Well Ellomar,” Briana said. “What do you think?”
_____Ellomar giggle and Azariah crossed his arms. Briana untied a ribbon from Azariah’s hair.
_____“Maybe yellow is the wrong color for him.”
_____Ellomar giggle turned into a laugh.
_____“The yellow is fine. It's the ruffles around his neck that I think are funny.”
_____Azariah growled and went behind the dressing curtain.
_____“I think,” Sapphire said from Ellomar’s shoulder. “The ruffles would do him a great and deserve justice. I can just imagine him now, prancing through the woods with glee.”
_____“Ho-ho,” Azariah said. “Ha-ha, it is to laugh.”
_____Azariah ripped the ruffled chocker from his neck and tossed it on the curtain’s bar.<--
_____After the whole sceen Azariah ends up in this. -->Inside Briana saw a new Azariah. He wore a dark faded green shirt, with lavender seams. The cuffs around his wrists had one emeem in white, embroidered on each. Tan pants hung from under his half buttoned shirt.<--
_____Now tridition for Neenteko is to where a rope for a belt. Azariah picked out a white one at this point in chapter nine. Also an emeem looks like the following: The wolf-like body had a long tail, white paws and gray fur. The emeem’s blue eyes matched its four blue wings.
_____My attemt to illistrate an emeemterahn is on the front of my site. Anyhow, I guess that's a good enough covering of his character discription. Ellomar would be a better character to cover if you ask me, he's just cuter.
Note: All of this is under copyright with the library of congress, and as such registured under my name. :)

May I have permission to draw, or attempt to draw, Azariah?
Ya or Nay.
I'll assume Ya. :D
So he has no fur or is he covered in fur like a cat? You specified white hair on ears is why I asked or is the fur only on his ears? Or is it like a beard and just comes up the face? If not what color is he, pale white or pink/ caucasian?
Long, slightly curled, hair to knees - hanging down or over the back?
You said they have cat-like features other than face ears and tail is that it?
Do they walk on their toes or flat footed?

_____Azariah on the other hand only has fur on his ears and tail. He also grows a beard at times. Later on his head's hair is held back by a black cloth.

_____And I'm still ahead of scedual by four or five days. Lost more than 1,500 words worth of my orginal story by editing out a character. However, things seem to be flowing better if you ask me. I was even able to save some conversations by passing diologue to other characters. I also added a lot more because of the new story line to go with it.

Sounds cool, Angel.
Hope you saved the character you deleted onto a CD or something. I do when I kill something. Never know when it may come in handy for something else.
How have you been? I have been so busy these last 2 or 3 weeks. Hopefully things will settle back into a more normal routine soon so I can relax.

_____Things really went to pot here for a time. Some domb things where said, and well, I don't want to talk about it. ;)
_____As for saving my work, I have the very orginal story that I wrote somewhere on CD. I should dig that up and show the pain that was my book once. :P

Well,
I managed to keep going today and since breakfast, I have edited another 1,288 words. Add that to this mornings count that I posted earlier of 2,660 and that makes todays total... 3,948. :D If I had time, I'd round it out to 4 but I have to quit for the day.
Hisart, good to see you going strong. Keep it up.
Catch you later. :D

_____Today was a fair day if their ever was one. Keeping with my scedual (still ahead) but I did over 400 words this day. Tomrow I may get more done. I ran into a small snag that brought my work time down for today. Let's just say I thought to much about some things. ;)

_____Right now I'm ticked, big difference from yesterday. Odd that I compleated around 1,300 words of work. Good work day, bad day for cash. Dang I need a drink.

_____Two moons ago I compleated over 80 words of work.
whitehawke

Angel
Two moons?
I always thought that two moons meant two months? Am I wrong?
mmmmmmm Perhaps I've got it wrong.
Anyway, if two moons is two months, I'm sure you've done more than 80 words in that amount of time. If it's not two months well, hey man, we all have times where things don't go to plan. That's life. If those times didn't happen, then we might not appreseate the good times.
May the Lord bless you.

I've managed to get a few words written in the past couple of days inbetween things. Saturday I wrote 575 and though that seems very small, it's a good start. Today, I wrote 723 and hope to get in more later though that may not happen with all the company I have here at my house now. I was discussing the writing process with WG a few days ago and realized I just need to write the thing. I'll edit it later, rewrite what need to be rewritten and just get the story out of my head for now. I know that sounds elementary but for this picky perfectionist, it's a major breakthrough. !thumbsup!

Woohoo! 1269 words today!
I have to make 'deals' with myself to keep myself motivated on this long project - so my deal is, if I write an additional 5,000 words between today and Thursday, I get to take the rest of August "off" this project to work on something else I've been hankerin' to do.
1 day down, 3 to go! 8-)

_____I think you're right, but it's rare that I even see the moon, so two days in a row is a big thing for me.
DrRita,
_____Very happy for you. For the count and the brake through. Maybe Jones should inform the rest of the foarm how to write. :D
ArizonaWriterBJ,
_____I used to do deals, but they didn't work out for me. My scedual is much more affective for me. ;) Each to his/her/both own though.

Good for you Arizona . . . !thumbsup! !thumbsup! I've been almost hitting my goal of 1100 words a day, but I still haven't made it. I wrote about 800 yesterday on two different projects, most of which I will definately have to rewrite but that's part of the game, right? I will try to make up today.
