Does anyone here know the exact definition of chapter books? I know they are the next step in readers for children after easy readers, I think but then I can't seem to find anything really definate. I would like to know the length (words), usual number of chapters, any vocabulary restrictions etc. I would be thrilled with a link. I've searched and found lots of stuff but nothing very specific on the specifics.

_____I'm lost on that one Rita. However, I would think a chapter book should have about 2000 words a chapter, and be devoid of medical terms. :D

Chapter Books: I went to barns and noble yesterday. I saw a great lot of them, many different stories to choose from. I think they're level 6. for 4-5th graders. They have longer Paragraphs, more indepth stories, stronger characters, Just more to comprehend. I read the inside cover of one of my niece's Books. She reads level one. Like: Bear goes up. Bear paints house.
Chapter Books are like: There was a bear named Bubba. He was very proud of his home. Where he lived with his wife Daisy and thier two cubs Hugs and Tugs. Blah, Blah, Blah! "Know what I mean Vern?" (Jim Varney, aka Earnest P. Warrall)
I hope this helps some what. :o

I think it's just a book with chapters. As the reading level increases the books are divided up, as opposed to the younger levels which are all one chapter.
