In a small group discussion at church recently my pastor made the comment that many people want a "cheap gospel"...that which is simple and doesn't cost them much. My response to that was that people want to be able to buy 25 cent bread from the discount store rather than gourmet bread that costs 8 dollars a loaf. But what seems simple and inexpensive is basically worthless...it has no nutritional value and only offers a quick "carb buzz" that doesn't sustain the body.
And in my mind, that segued to my writing. I want to write "8 dollar gourmet bread." I want to offer something that costs the reader something, and in return gives them something nutritious and sustaining. And even though people are quck to buy the "25 cent bread" writings, I don't want to compromise, even if that limits my marketability. I know that somebody somewhere is looking for that obscure little bake shop tucked away on a side street that fills the air with tempting odors of rising yeast and baking wheat.

FF,
Don't give up on that desire. There are more and more people who are looking for that gormet bread, because they are tired of the cheap, nonnutritional stuff. It just doesn't stay with them the way the good stuff does. Don't ever compromise, and I am so glad to see you're back. I missed you. !thumbsup!
To one Christ is the aroma of death, and to the other life. Conviction is sweet to the hearer who desires to be refined by the word of God, but the fact is that few people appreciate it. So for 25 cents you can get your bread conviction free.

Never give up on your dream if you feel called to do this, then I say go for it. I agree, my book is rather pricey but my reward was one comment I can pick out of the forty I have gotten that meant more than all the rest.
One woman who said," I was a believer but not steadfast. I read your book, last Sunday I rededicated my life to Christ. Thank you for reminding me of the days when my life lacked chaos and my heart was full of joy and light in the Spirit."
I know that to sell our books we need reviewers, but this comment was all I needed to let me know I made a difference in one person. I honestly may not sell many more books, but ...this made my heart swell and made me proud of the teachings I have learned through our Lord Jesus Christ. Without him I could have never completed this project.

Yes! I love the symbolism, cheap bread/gourmet bread.
Us Christians too often settle for handing out cheap bread, when our Daddy, the bread of life, owns the bakery.
Some Christians are coming around and begining to produce the $8 gourmet stuff, but takes time and work to get it right. But when its right...mmmmm mmm good for sinners and saints.
Things to remember, however, gourmet doesn't mean complicated. Simple is always best. Look for one truth, and write on top of that truth to explain that truth. Jesus was a story teller, you be a story teller. People listen to stories and remember them. Watch out for compromise. Its easy to get wrapped up in the story and water down the truth we want to communicate because we love the writing, and not the sinner.
Hope this helps.

Cheap gospel and cheap writing are not necessarily the same. Write what you want, and people will read what they want. Take what you like, and convert to what the people like. I like 7-grain bread, etc., but cheap stuff is good enough for bologna sandwiches.
