Saw Wanted (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wanted/)today. It's kinda like a nihilistic mashup of The Office and The Matrix with better effects and a worse wardrobe. It's a shamelessly R-rated film, and I appreciated that. It could tell its story without pandering to a younger crowd (pandering, instead, to a more 'mature' audience).
The protagonist has the heritage of being able to pump his heart up to 400 beats per minute, giving him more adrenalin and better focus. It's as good a rationale for the Max Payne-like Matrixy 'bullet time' as anything. I liked how he was taking medication in the beginning of the film to prevent the very condition that makes him an effective gunsmith.
Like 300, this film is a triumph of form over substance, and taken in that fashion, it worked for me.
Oh, and if this film doesn't serve as a subtle rebuttal to the 'you brought a knife to a gunfight' line from The Untouchables, I'll eat my metaphorical hat. The Butcher was hell-on-wheels with any edged weapon.
I liked that it asked a big question, namely, who am I, with the chaser, what am I settling for in my life. Of course, as a theist, I think there are very good answers to those questions, but I appreciated that they were at least asking an important question.
It's a start.
