I wrote this up for a friend who wanted to try linux and I thought in case anybody else was interested, I'd post here.
By the way, Ubuntu is just one kind of Linux but it's the one I use and supposed to be one of the most popular and easiest to use.
The instructions apply to any other kind of linux distro you might want to try except of course for web addresses of ubuntu.
Trying Out Linux
.To find out if this is even what you want, go to www.ubuntu.com and then click on Desktop Edition.
.Once you've looked at the site and decide you want to try it out, go to www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu
.Click download ubuntu, choose a location and download.
.Once it is downloaded, you need one more thing. This is a .iso file, which has to burned differently than a data CD
.You need Infrarecorder for this: http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5
.Install it like a normal program.
.Go ahead and run if even though it might say it's not verified or whatever.
.Then, go to Actions -> Burn Image
.Find the file ubuntu 8.04 – desktop - .i386 and click okay.
.Once it is burned to a CD it should work.
.Then you have to make some changes to your bios
.Put the disk in the drive and then restart your computer. As it is restarting, press esc (for hp computers) [OR F12 for dell computers] before the Windows screen comes up. I'm not sure if the terms will be the same for hp computers, since I have a Dell computer.
.Go to System Setup -> Boot Sequence and then make IDE CD-ROM DEVICE first. Or something that has CD-ROM in it. It doesn't really matter what is 2 or 3 I don't think, but try to keep the order the same as it was, just that CD-ROM is now first. Then save and exit.
.You might have to restart your computer again I'm not sure. But if you have to, make sure the disk is still in the drive.
.Then, whenever the disk is in the cd drive, the computer will boot from the disk you've made. Once it boots, you can do stuff on it like install programs (but you need an internet connection to do that) and it doesn't do anything permanent to your computer.
.When you're done trying it out, you can leave, and it'll pop the disk out, but of course anything you did would be erased.
.If you want to install it, well, I'm not sure on this part, b/c I installed this before they came out with the Wubi installer, so I'm not sure how you want to do it. I'll research it and do another writeup if and when you decide to install it.
.Any questions PM me and I will try to be more clear.
