How do the gifts, "divers kinds of tongues" and "the interpretation of tongues", differ, in the following scripture?:

"To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:" (1 Corinthians 12:10)

Thanks for you input...

I always go to the Bible gateway when I don't understand something and read the verse in many different versions. Most of the time they will bring it all together in your mind.

you asked. How do the gifts, "divers kinds of tongues" and "the interpretation of tongues", differ, in the following scripture?:

Well the way i read it diver kinds of tongues means being able to speak in different kinds of tongues and the other means you may not speak but you can interpret what the others are saying. Below is some of the versions that help me to show to you why I see it this way. The are highlighted in blue.

New International Version (NIV)
10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[

New Living Translation (NLT)
10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.

English Standard Version (ESV)
10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

I hope this helps and I hope that you will find www.Biblegateway.com very useful.
