In my quest to narrow down the list of names for our new son, I ran into the Social Security website, which allows you to easily search for the most popular names in any year since 1879: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

If you're writing a historical novel, this could come in super handy!

Think I'll file this away for some future reference. Thanks, Kristina, for posting this. Great idea!

Congratulations on your new son, Kristina! I have three of those (and a daughter too). Kids are the best.

As for popular names, I think mine finally fell off the top of the list in recent years. It's about time!

Congratulations, Kris. I bookmarked a site. This is another site that gives the most popular names in the 1800's in case anyone's novel is before 1879, which mine are.

Congrats.

My hubby and I were discussing names (briefly) he doesn't want any hugely popular names (he is also a teacher). He wants us to make them up, but i am not being that mean to our children. Also no hebrew names. I wonder where he gets these ideas from. But at least I have a bit of time to talk him around, (no children yet)
