There I was last night, all hopped up on Maxwell House, working on a book proposal for over six hours. I get about five hours of sleep, wake up this morning, fire up the computer--AND IT WON'T BOOT UP! Six and a half hours later, I've had to gut my new computer and put everything in my old computer (which I thank God still happened to be under the bed).
Thankfully, the new harddrive works in the old computer and I can get all my files. The bad thing is, I'm going to have to reformat the harddrive because Windows was corrupted on it (boot sector virus, I'd bet). Since this computer only has 12 gigs of harddrive space and the other harddrive has 30 gigs of data, I'm going to have to figure out what to sacrifice (and spend the evening burning off my 15+ gig mp3 collection).
So, Merry, lesson learned--ALWAYS GET TECH SUPPORT
I swear, if Circuit City wasn't so far away, I'd have already bought a laptop this morning and said to heck with all this mess.

Well, after switching parts back and forth a few times to save all the data I could, I finally got my computer back up and running. The only thing I lost were all the pictures I'd collected for making graphics for the church.
I still don't really know what happened, but a fresh format of my harddrive and everything's working good as new again. :D

That can ruin your day. Sadly, I tend to view the whole world in a very dim light when my computer is acting up.
Thankfully, that hasn't happened often since I declared myself Windows-free.

Well, when I built this computer, the first time I got online, I got hit with the blaster worm. Instead of doing a fresh format then, I got symantic's blaster removal tool and kept on truckin'. That was my mistake. After the reformat, this thing is running routine applications twice as fast as before. I think it's going to turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
I also broke out the Trend Micro virus scanner that came with my mobo and trashed that AntiVir personal edition I've been using for the last two years--the virus scanner had gotten so flakey after the last update that it would literally pop on and off based on network activity. Of course, I probably wouldn't have gotten hit with a virus at all had I not got the brillient idea to find a free text-to-speech reader to help me proofread my manuscript. That, and new audio drivers to stop the popping I was getting in my speakers. One of the two got me. :( But I'm feeling MUCH better now. :D

My wife likes to reformat her HD every few months just to keep things running smoothly. I hate creating that much work for myself. I use an open source disk optimizer that cleans up some of the little files the Mac OS leaves lying around and call it a day.

My old computer ran for about 2 years (from the time I put Win2k SP3 on it until I retired it) without a reformat or any problems at all, except for an overheating processor and a dead CDRW. I only defragged it twice, too--it was so slow I had to block out 10 hours to defrag a 12 gig drive.
