I just bought a new computer that runs on Vista. First, I hate it. But, I'm dealing, though I'm still mourning the death of my XP machine. :(
Anyway, I've noticed some strange things that this one won't let me do, most noticeably, I'm having difficulty getting my number pad to work inside MS Word. I turn on the Num Lk, and what I'm wanting to do is use the keypad with the Alt key to input fancy characters. Now that I've tried it, I can't even get it to work with Mozilla! What on earth am I doing wrong? Is there some secret I haven't found yet to get it to work?

I don't know what you're doing wrong, but I have Vista and don't have any problem with the number pad. I would check with tech support. Maybe it's something about the way it's set up.

It IS a laptop... is your computer a laptop or a desktop?

Strange... back to the book for me, I suppose. I probably need to figure out if something somewhere is overriding the Num Lock feature... it's probably in the control panel...
I hate Vista... I've now been using it for 4 days, and I'm still mourning the untimely death of my XP machine... And, unfortunately, my new Dell is built FOR Vista, and it's nearly impossible to downgrade to XP, and if you can, it will barely function on the machine, from what the Geek Squad folks tell me. *sigh* I guess I'm stuck with it.

You'll love it once you get used to it. I hated it at first too. But now that I've used it for a couple of years - my hubby put it on our desktop as soon as it came out - I would never go back to XP. I'm sure there is probably a number lock override that's tripping you up.

I wish I still had my ME disc. Microsoft just keeps adding useless stuff to their programs. I still use them for now, but sometimes I wonder.

I use Ubuntu Linux, and I think it's so much better for basic stuff like internet, word processing, music etc. And you can't get viruses either.
But then again, I haven't used Windows Vista, though I have used XP.
