I've been trying out an Operating System (OS) called Ubuntu which a type of Linux OS. I think it's pretty cool. It does all the basic stuff that Windows and Mac can do, only it's secure from virus (unlike windows) and free/cheap (unlike Mac). True Linux is NOT good for playing the latest games out there.
But it has a web browser, at several word processor software to use such as AbiWord or Open Office Writer. Plus it comes with the equivalent of PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Visio (sort of), all for free. There are also tons of games, mostly strategy and arcade games. Tons of other software that's free, downloadable from the internet.
However, Ubuntu, being a different OS, cannot automatically run Windows software. If you download a program called WINE, it will be able to run SOME windows software, including yWriter4 a free writing software!!!!
Yes, it's a bit difficult to get Ubuntu on your computer, especially if you don't want to get rid of windows. You can download an .iso file from ubuntu.com which you have to burn on a CD in a special way using InfraRecorder a program you will also have to download from the internet. Once you do that you pop the CD in, and you can try Ubuntu, running it from a disk WITHOUT having to install it to see if you like it. Don't want to do all that? Request a free CD sent to you, and then you just put the CD in to try it.
If you then want to install it (especially if you DON'T WANT TO GET RID OF WINDOWS), or you have more questions PM me and I will write out a detailed explanation. Yes, it took me a LONG time to figure all of this stuff out, but I am more than happy to save you the trouble.
