What is this all about with Cosco and Walmart's trying to ration the rice that we buy. Are they trying to get people to run out and buy rice. I'm not sure i'm beginning to think the world is coming to an end. Wars and rumors of wars, earth quakes in divers places like I'll and KY.

Man we better look up to see if the clouds are parting and the dead in Christ is rising. I'm not too serious here but getting there....

What do you think about Either of these comments. I'm thinking about going out and buying up all the rice i can find at the dollar store before they start rationing it.

What do you mean "rationing". Are they raising the prices? Cutting back on how much they put in the containers/bags?

I've already cut back on a lot of the stuff I buy from Wal-Mart. I don't particularly like the company. Not sure why. Just a gut feeling I have. Anyway, I get my rice and much of my other groceries at Aldi's. :)

Mouse, that means that they limit how much you are allowed to buy.

Ahhh.... thanks for clarifying that for me, CP. :)

That seems rather silly to me. You would think they would want to sell as much as they can.

I must have missed the part in Revelation where Wal-Mart running short on rice is a sign of the Apocalypse

LoL I meant professor that parts of the world are starting to riot over food. Just the general unrest and chaos in the world. Is that how you spell chaos?

ProfessorAlan

yes, that's how you spell it. I just didn't think this unrest was anything new.

Well I personally have never heard of people fighting in the streets over food but may be they have.

Of course they have. The homeless do this. They fight over food, clothing, shelter among other things. Folks just have a tendency not to see this side.

If people are fighting over food now it's because many of them haven't been taught how to survive in hard times. Or they simply didn't pay attention when they were being taught. I have notice that for some odd reason folks (I'm being general here. I know not everyone is like this.) seem to think things should come easy with very little work involved. Now all the sudden they have to stop and think, work harder, and stop being so wasteful. They have to, shock of shocks, plan things out. All the way down to the last grain of rice. And this throws them into a panic. They don't know what to do.
And I'm sure the media isn't helping matters any either.

No kiddin' Mouse. It's scary to see so many signs of the end times approaching...Scary and exhilerating! I can't wait to see Jesus! thumbsup!

I don't like Wal-Mart of Target for that matter either. Both of those support homosexuals and what they do...ick. *turns green*

I realize it's trendy to slam Wal-Mart (and I know more about some of their practices than some), but credit where credit is due...

The British had a meeting this week to discuss the problem. There are already people rioting in the streets over the food shortage. (not in Britain but elsewhere) The blame seems to be falling heavily on biofuels and a string of natural disasters worldwide.

Let's not forget unfair agricultural institutions that makes it more expensive for people to purchase food grown a mile away than to purchase food made 1200 miles away. I mean, among other things.

I'm not aware of those actually, Ran. Would love to know what you're referring to. I'm assuming organic produce? I grow a small organic garden myself and I know it takes a lot more work than hormone/pesticide treated stuff. I always assumed that was the price difference.

Of course, I do know agricultural institutions that are putting patents on seeds for food, making it impossible for farmers to ever be self-sustained. That irks me to no end.

There was a great article on it a while back, and I'll have to fish for it. It was a Korean paper that was looking at agribusiness and how it works, and basically showed how it's holding most of the third world for ransom so we in the industrialised world can get fat rear-ends at McDonald's...

But what else is new, eh?

Cymrugirl

Looks like rear-ends are becoming even less important than our vehicles, which eat more than anybody and are now consuming the world's food so we can drive to McDonalds.

I heard today that people were going into walmarts wanting to buy pallets of rice. its because people think there is a shortage of rice for some reason. they said they can't keep up with the people wanting to buy so much of it at a time and that is why the put a limit on it.

We don't eat much rice but we feed it to the dogs, that with chicken so when they talk about rice going up i worry. but also i will only buy rice that is made in the states.

I don't think there's any rice grown in the states. Wild rice - but that's not real rice.

I've heard a lot of the people buying up rice are sending it to families in countries where the food shortages are severe. That and food sellers who rely on staples are trying to buy in bulk before prices go up. The limits I've read about aren't denying people the ability to buy 'some' rice, just denying people the ability to come in and buy more than they need.

Weird. I wonder where we grow rice? I didn't think we had the climate for it anywhere.

I've seen rice paddies in California and Texas, I know that...

Rice grows in a variety of climates, just like beans and wheat. That's why it's a staple food for half the planet.

I've seen many patties as you call them but can't recall which states I seen them in. Something that is really noticeable is a pig farm.. I know it's off topic. But whewww... ever been close to a pig farm or feed LOT.

I return you back to your regularly scheduled thread. LOL

I like Wal-Mart, though it has taken a couple of turns for the worse since Sam died. And I love rice; I cook it for myself almost every day. I'm glad that Wal-Mart was involved with restoration after Hurricane Katrina, and I believe it is people's prejudice against "big business" in general that creates the allegations against it, such as preferring profits over people's needs.

I've heard a lot of the people buying up rice are sending it to families in countries where the food shortages are severe. If this is true, then the rationing makes sense. Bulk buying means that people coming later can't find any rice. I find that the majority of people who take Wal-Mart and other big-box companies to task don't really understand what it takes to run such companies. Decisions have to be made, and they are bound to be unpopular with some people.

I don't like Wal-Mart of Target for that matter either. Both of those support homosexuals and what they do...ick. *turns green*
This is one corporate decision, however, that I cannot defend, assuming it's true. Can you find any links to verify this?

Hmmm.... "supporting" homosexuals and treating homosexuals as human beings often gets muddled up within Christian thinking. They aren't the same thing. Make sure we know which is which.

Interesting. I had no idea. I just always thought because it was so small, you could grow a lot in a small area. Well, not small, but you know, that it didn't need space all over the place. And I didn't know about being able to grow it in multiple climates.
