My first book, Humorous Happenings in Holy Places, opened up a speaking platform for me. I sell many books when I speak. It seems people are hungry for humor. Then TV and radio appearances generates even more interest.

Just a quick note to make sure you make the distinction between adverstising and publicity-advertising you pay for, publicity you don't. Publicity is promotion you get through word of mouth, articles written about you etc.

To get some good ideas, I recommend books like The Frugal Book Promoter by Carolyn-Howard Johnson. Her sitehttp://www.howtodoitfrugally.com and newsletter are helpful too.

Shel Horowitz also has a site/book about grassroots marketing, and the Publicity Hound, Joan Stewart has fabulous info of all kinds about publicity in general.

I've written press releases for a variety of people, and they are a good tool that is inexpensive if you do it yourself (there's a free tutorial if you need it at http://www.publicityhound.com

Hope these get the ball rolling for you.
