How many of you take your pets to the doctor. We take Jack and Max to the doc at least once a year. they are on heart worm pills and jack is allergic to flea spit. LOL. Yea flea spit. so sometimes he has to take a itchy pill.

Last year a vet came around locally to the schools to give out shots for Rabies and the like at a discounted price.

Sorry! You made me laugh. This just sounded funny. Did the vet come to the school to give the kids rabies shots?

In answer to your question, we did take our "babies" to the vet, but they are all in animal heaven now.

We didn't take the critters to the vet when I was growing up. When Tribble adoted me I decided I would try taking better care of him than that. HOwever this yera I have missed his appts for his booster shots, etc., b/c of being out of work for so long and not having the money. It really grates on me that I can't afford to get him to the vet.

I took my dog to the vet when she was so thin I was afraid she had worms. But we got that taken care of, and never needed to go again. Now, I guess I never will need to go again, as I don't own a dog...

I only take my pets to the vet if they appear to need it and I can't take care of it myself. I wish I could take them more often, but since money is needed for that... well, it just doesn't work out.

I just found out that my cat and dog are both allergic to fleas. I had to have my kitty given a shot to help relieve the allergic reaction. I'm going to have to do the same thing for my dog. Unfortunately I have to wait for more income. Poor thing.

think about it and pray about it. helping another pet wil help to heal your heart.

We get itchy pills cause Jack is allergic to flea spit too. Hey that is what the vet called it. LOL. when i can't afford to take him to the vet i give him benadryl can't recall how much we gave him and itchy pills are not that expensive here.

Like 12 bucks for 20 and most of the times they will last for a few days. Some times they are allergic to some foods too. Esp small dogs. Around here our pets go to the doc even when we don't. LOL.
Baby asprin are also god for dogs that have pain.

Call your vet if he is anything like my vet he will be more than happy to tell you how much Benadryl to give the pup. it does work and it's really better than the itchy pills cause they can cause them to gain weight.

Sorry don't mean to go on. Animals are a passion for me.

Jacks,

I'd probably do that if I was living by myself or with just a husband, but I'm with my family still, and so all of my siblings are still here... and not all pound dogs are good with kids. My sweetheart is a cowboy, and he brought me a bum calf to take care of. So that's what I've been pouring myself into the last almost a week. Thank you for the advice!

We have 2 cats, one who a little more delicate in her health than the other. Both go to the vet every year, but one needs some extra meds and care.

That's OK Jack's me too. When I first went to college and things weren't going so well, I was looking for a summer job and drove to all the vet clinics I could find in the phone book looking for a job as a kennel assistant, etc. Never got a job, but.... Before I got interested in computers I thought I would have liked to have been a game warden back in AK - knees and other prblms pretty much eliminated that.

As far as crittrers being allergic to fleas, I thought by definition flea bites were itchy, and that's what makes the critters scratch. When you say "allergic" are ref to a more sever reaction? I dose my cat in the summer w/ the drops, seems to work OK for him.

Evidently, critters that are allergic to flea bites break out or something and even when the fleas are gone they are still itchy. Or at least that's what the vet told me when I took Artemis in.

Jacks- thanks for the tip about the Benadryl. I'll be sure to ask the vet about it.

And for the record, I'm animal crazy too. I love each one of my animals, including the crab, as though they are my kids. I could talk about my pets, past and present, all day long. I'm just trying to spare you all from my long windedness (is that even a word...lol) . ;)

Hubby and I have 2 cats and are going to get a Chocolate Lab in a few weeks. The puppies are 5 weeks old today! :) (Now, if I can just convince Hubby that Chewbacca is more than an appropriate name...)

We have 2 cats, one who a little more delicate in her health than the other. Both go to the vet every year, but one needs some extra meds and care.

I hear you on the delicate health thing, Prof. My one cat, Alley, (yes that's a good name for a cat) is diabetic, and we have to make sure she gets in to the vet regularly. Normally, she just goes in for normal checkups unless we've noticed strange behavior or lumps or something. But, because she receives daily insulin injections, when we travel, she either has to come with us (if we're visiting family) or she has to stay with the vet (if we're going camping, or on a lengthier trip.) She's really good natured about it, and only squirms sometimes when she gets her injections (usually because I've stabbed her too deep.)

The other cat goes only for yearly checkups (she has one on Saturday). She's a handful, and the 3 mile trip or less to the vet has her yowling the whole way, and hissing. Then, when we GET to the vet, she refuses to come out of the crate. We've had to take the crate apart more than once to get her out.

Oh, the Benadryl thing. We once had a black Lab/Samoyed mix that was allergic to toads. We had a pond in the back yard with toads, and sometimes the toads would get into the fenced part of the yard and Gizmo (the dog) would eat the toads. Well, the first time this happened his face swelled up--his eyes practically swelled shut! (I was about 8 or 9 at the time.) The vet did prescribe Benadryl for Gizmo. He was about 65 or 70 pounds, and I want to say that we gave him a child's dose. Needless to say, Mom kept a bottle on hand in case he felt the need to eat more toads, which I think it happened a few more times over the course of his life.

Depending on the size of the dog (and I'm not a vet) you can probably give them a child's dose. But, do call your vet and ask them. They'll know for sure, as well as the size of the dose.

As far as jack and his fleas goes. We put the thing on his back and that helps and I'm praying he gets healed of this allergic thing. Cause it is so hard on him. He can get bit by a flea and he starts scratching and he don't stop, he does this to the point of bleeding and making his skin raw.

Max on the other hand, thankfully just scratches like your normal dog. We mow the grass and do all we can to keep the fleas down. Wash their bedding and often have put a flea collar in the sweeper back when we used sweeper bags.

This was a good idea its fun learning about all your pets.

I know what you are talking about Rachel. we have to watch about the pets we get cause we live in our own house but in mom's yard.

My dog is a Rat Terrier named Elvis. He is the best little guy, smart and funny. He goes to the vet for a yearly check up and has done pretty well in between visits except for once when he went swimming in a lake that was turning over and he got some kind of fungus/bacterial thing we had to buy antibiotics for! He lives to please my husband and me - especially hubby since he's retired and they are constant companions! We've had a lot of rough weather the last few months and I was fastened up in the house because of it so me and Elvis started a blog for fun. Of course when things got back to "normal" I didn't have much time for it. Still, you can see a picture of Elvis there :).

Well "a lake turning over" may be a colloquial term? Where I live it's when the lake bottoms seem to come up to the surface (they look muddy). This seems to happen a couple times a year. It's hard to explain! I never really thought about it too much :).

When I think of a body of some form of 'water' turning over, my mind goes to a sewer lagoon. I'm wondering if this may be what it was? A few times a year, they turn over and the stink is AWFUL!

well lets see. I have a good cat story.

We have sevral cat's that come and go as they please, pluse all the nebior hood cats come by from time to time as well.

The only ones we let inside are the ones that out ours though.

Well anyways one morning somehow a bird gets into the house. LOL all of the cats are chaseing and hopping after it.

Well the birds ends up flying into our room and lands on the far certin rod, And low and behold here comes all of the cat's in our room.

One of the cat's midnight he is s smallish black cat. gets up on the babys crib. (this is the midle child befor amanda is born.) At the foot of the bed.

The bird trys to take off flying right over head of midnight, and midnight jumps, turns a back flip catches the bird in his mouth wile his back is faseing the ground, fineshes the backflip and lands on all fours on the crib mattress.

We where so impressed with the feet that we didn't feel like we had the right to take it away from him. After all he did literly ern his lunch this time.

So we Pick him up, bird in mouth, and set him outside.
Midnight walks off bird in mouth and head held high, perading around for a few minuets proud of his awsome catch.

LOL i don't think i need to go into detail on what happens to the bird. Lets just say the we now know that with any of our cats in the house we more than likley will never have a problem with rodance.

I only have 2 cats currently, but hubby got me a body pillow for my birthday. Josie, my non-diabetic and completely insane Calico cat, thinks the body pillow is hers. Last few nights I've woken up and found her on it somewhere that made it impossible for me to move!

Dumb cat. ;) What's she gonna do when there's a puppy in the house?

Oh, while we're on it, does anyone have any training advice for puppies? Hubby and I are getting a chocolate lab in a few weeks, and though I've had young dogs before, none quite this young. I think he'll be 8 - 10 weeks when we get him...

We have a 3-1/2 year-old black lab mix (possibly with a Great Dane???). His name is Smokey. We've had him since he was six weeks old. He's 93 pounds of easy-going love and fun.

Yes, we take him to the vet as needed and yearly when we get a card from the vet saying that it's time for his checkup. It can be expensive, true, but since we now "empty-nesters," we don't mind the expense.

Righter, I suggest that you read Cesar's Way by the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan. I just read it and I might have done a few things differently if I had read that before we got Smokey.

We have two cats and a dog. My calico I got after my divorce 8 years ago, my blue persian I found on the opposite side of the highway in the grass (it was a God thing because I needed a distraction) and the dog I got from the pound here when I decided I was tired of my youngest being petrified of dogs.

My Blue Persian (Smokey) is a bit tempermental and has my kids scared of her. She doesnt' even have front claws..lol. But man she can chase them and have them running. I know it's mean but I can't help but laugh.

My calico is on special food because she has crystals in her bladder.

Sometimes I think we spend as much on them as the kids, but we love em.

Blessings,
Lisa

YA Cesar rules. The best advice i can give you is a bit of knowldge

Pups espicealy the realy young ones live to please or at least in most cases
every one i had always seemed to look at me as if asking permision or even wanting to be taught how to do something. the young ones are easer to train

And you don't get much more loyal of a dog than a lab.

I have a king water bed and it's just barley big enough and I have small dogs.

Jack came in with a scratch on him today not sure where it came from but it's there. My dad was driving me nuts today running back an forth in front of the house on the scooter and Jack likes to chase him. It was really hot and I wanted to smack him. (dad that is) it seems sometimes that he intendeds them harm by doing nutty things.

i know he is jealous in a way cause i treat the dogs so well, and cause my little dog whips up on his dog when we accidentally let them get out together. But what can you do since i live on his property. It can be irritating. Any other people out there have trouble either with family or neighbors over your pets.

I finally had to go over there and catch dad out of site and carry jack home, he panted for 30 min and now he's coughing a bit. He's sleeping now.

Sorry this is so long ... I had to vent. I love my dad but some times he can do things that really upset me.

That's so sad. :( My neighbor's have a yellow Lab that's not trained at all, and they keep it in a small pen in the FENCED back yard (which isn't very big in the first place!) I feel so sorry for that dog. When they let him out, he runs all over the place since he's not trained. Poor thing.

I found out some more info about the puppies we're looking at, after I'd talked to my vet about it. The puppies sound very healthy, as are the parents. They've been scanned (they being the parents) for hip displaysia and show no indications of having retinal problems. :) Yea!

Now if I can just convince hubby that Chewbacca is an appropriate name for a Chocolate Lab whose father is 120 pounds. (Hubby doesn't know that little tidbit. The mother is like 55 or 60 pounds, though...)

Hi Jacks: Last October we had Ginger out hunting in South Dakota. She spotted a pheasant and jumped out of the pickup truck. She popped a hip out of the socket and I rushed her to a local vet. He put her out and popped it back in ($300). After the set time we took off the tape but she could not use her leg. We took her to our local vet and he couldn't get the hip to stay in. He did surgery and shaved off the hip ball bone ($900). She is fine now and ready to hunt pheasants again. I will never have her in the back of a pickup again. My point here is, she is part of the family and although I thought I would never spend that amount on my dog, I never gave it a second thought. Like I said she is part of the family.

Hubby and I went and looked at puppies yesterday. I think we may have reached a decision between the two males we looked at. One is expected to be smaller than the other, and is more of a snuggler, so I think we'll go for that one, although I was thinking a bigger dog would be great. But, good point made by the breeder, a smaller dog would probably be easier for me to handle given the fact I'm pregnant and will be having a baby to deal with later in the year. :)

I posted pictures of the puppies on my Flickr site this morning, so if you want to go check them out, the link is on my signature.

The only thing I can think of, Jacks, is to just comfort them by talking to them in a soothing voice and petting them. I had a pup who was terrified of storms and that was the best I could do for him.

Here's a phrase I never thought I would say... "Son, the turtle is not a rocket. Please, put the poor thing away."
We've had this turtle, proudly named Polka Dot by my youngest, for about a week now. The kids are fascinated by it. I have had to tell them to not do a lot of different things but when I saw my son making rocket sounds and making the turtle blast off the couch it was all I could do not to laugh. Heres this turtle, head stretched as far as it could go, legs going as fast as they could go, being flown threw the air in my sons hands with my son doing sound effects. Now honestly how can a person not laugh at that.:p
The kids are not going to be happy when I tell them we have to let it go. They have really enjoyed having it around, but I'm sure it will be replaced with another creature of some sort soon enough.
