I write Historical Fiction, so I love to read it.
Any of you read any books by Judith Pella, Tracie Peterson, George Macdonald, Michael Phillips, Gilbert Morris, and Brock and Brodie Thoene?
I was curious... I love their books so much, and some more than others.:p

I have read the books in the Stonewicke Series. I also like Judith Pella when she writes with Michael Phillips.

I've read George Macdonald, Michael Phillips, Brock and Brodie theoene but not Pella or Peterson.
I love historical fic too. As a kid I used to read Thomas B. Costain (The Silver Chalice, The Black Rose two of my favorites). I also loved Lloyd C. Douglass and and James Mitchner.

I also love Lloyd C. Douglas and James Mitchner. Racheal, I haven't read any of the authors on your list yet, but they are on my to read list. I've already purchase the Jerusalem Scroll Series by Brock and Brodie Thoene to read after I read the Mark of the Lion Series by Rivers and the Mark and John books by Jenkins.

Oh, when you said the Mark and John books that reminded me of another set of books I liked by Marjorie Holmes.

Haven't read George Macdonald or the Thoenes; don't like Pella, Phillips, and Morris; but I have enjoyed one or two of Peterson's stories. I just finished my first of Lloyd Douglas's books (The Big Fisherman) and quite enjoyed it. I'm definitely looking forward to reading some of of his stuff.
As for my own personal historical fic favorites: Mary Johnston tops the list by a mile. I've also enjoyed Harold Bell Wright (particularly When a Man's a Man). Oh, and Milena McGraw's After Dunkirk is excellent.

Tamera,
another Thoene series I would recommend is the A.D. Chronicles. Utterly fascinating pieces of work, each is a masterpiece of history. I love them and eagerly wait each one as it comes out.
Tarin,
sorry you don't like those authors. You should seriously read some Macdonald, he's VERY good. And you might like the Thoene's. I've also read some Harold Bell Wright (Shepherd of the Hills, and others) and he's good.
and I've read some James Michener too... but didn't care for his as much.

Thanks, Rachel. I'll put them on my to read list. I also want to read thier "Legends of the West" book.

I read the first "Legends of the West" and it was good. I really like what they say as the forward or introduction or whatever. It's about John Wayne, because they used to work for him...so it's really amazing, make sure you read it, cause wow!
I also like "Jerusalem Vigil" but I wouldn't really recommend their "Shiloh" series... it's ok. But I didn't care for it as much. I like their newer books much better.
Oh, and have you ever read any by either of their two son's, Luke and Jake? I can't find them...but I do want to read them if I get a chance.

No, I never have. But someone I know did and she said she enjoyed their novels.

Thanks Tamera,
I'll keep trying to find them. I might have my library inter-library loan them. That might work...thanks!

I have read a lot of historical fiction, including some of Tracie Peterson and Gilbert Morris. I think I have read some of Judith Pella and Michael Phillips, but I can't remember what right now! There are so many good historical fiction books out there, and so many of them are great stories.

I love Peterson and some of Morris's books. I couldn't get into the Thoene's.
I love historical fiction and contemporary fiction as long as it's a good book.
I've actually just read Lisa Bergren's new series Begotten and Betrayed. It takes place in the 1300's and was so good. I couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next one. Matter of fact, I've got reviews on them on my site. www.christianbookworm.net.

Lisa
Right now i am reading Pella's Mark of the Cross. I picked it up cheaply.
I also read a series called Stonewycke Trilogy followed by Stonewycke Legacy. Mu Philips and Pella (i think)
I don't mind historical fan fiction, but i do write more contemporary fiction. I like Morris, Perterson and Thoene too. I am always reading and it depends what i have on hand or feel like.

I've read the Stonewycke books as well, and Phillips is not my favorite of the author's listed. I much prefer Peterson and the Thoene's..which did you know that their name is pronounced Tay-nee? Weird huh?

I wondered how your pronounced their name.

Well, I'm glad I could help you...I wondered too, cause I pronounced it Thow-een. But that's wrong.
I'd like to read some of Lisa Bergen's I think...and I liked your reviews on that...
On that note, sorry I haven't done any reviews... I can't believe how much has gone on in the last week. I'll honestly try to get to those next week for you, ok? I'm really sorry.

No prob Rachel...things have been busy here also...I actually didn't get a book read this week :(. BUT...on a lighter note. I had 2 authors send me their books to read and review! I was soo excited. Dana Mentink and Anita Higman both write mystery/suspense and I've reviewed one of Dana's before, but this is my first for Anita.

Thanks Lisa,
And that sounds really fascinating, I bet you are excited about that! wow, how fun! I haven't read a book in a while, but I own a number by Peterson, and Pella both that I can review if that's what you are looking for...let me know, ok?

Sounds good to me. I just read one by T Davis Bunn that I stayed up reading until midnight last night. I can't wait to review it. I'm thinking about starting a catagory for new artists, but the key is getting those new artists to get me something to read to so I can include it...what do you think?
Blessings,
Lisa

That really sounds like a good idea, Lisa. I think that would be awesome. You have a point, and I don't know what to say, except of course, for any of the artist's here on CW, that get published, they would be the easy ones, I'd think.

Joining the general consensus, I think that Phillips and Pella do their best work as a team. I remember back when I read their Stonewyck books being so impressed by the strong character development as well as the plot.
Thoene's books were the first books I ever read that made me cry. (And nearly the only ones, except for maybe a spot or two in Karen Kingsbury's.)
My favorite historical fic? Angela Elwell Hunt's "Theyn Chronicles" (middle ages), her "Legacies of the Ancient River" series (the life of Joseph and his brothers), and her "Keepers of the Ring" (Roanoke, the lost Colony and other early American).
She is going to be the keynote speaker at the American Christian Fiction Writers' annual conference being held in Minneapolis this year. I'm going to try and go. I can hardly wait!
I also have to put in my two sense for another big favorite: Francine Rivers' "Mark of the Lion" series. Tremendously well done!

Thanks Naomi for your imput. I haven't read any of Angela Hunt's, but I'd like to...I'll have to add her to my ever growing list of "to read" books! lol....
thanks!

I agree, Angela Hunt's books are good. And I love Francine Rivers. I got all of her Mark of the Lion series at once from the library and have to admit I didn't clean house or do laundry until I finished them all..lol. I also loved her Lineage of Grace series..it gave a totally new perspective on some of the women in the Bible. Rahab, Bethsheba, Mary, Tamar and Ruth. They made me cry, especially the one about Mary. I got a whole new outlook on the life of Jesus through His mother's eyes. I need to reread them so I can put them on my site..lol.
Blessings,
Lisa
