View Full Version : Singing in a Hebrew Tongue

It's been a long time since I've prayed or sang in tongues, but the other morning while driving to work I tuned on a station that plays contemplative spirituality type of music...Gregorian Chants and such. It's a quite soothing program, and is run by a Greek Orthodox Priest that I "sort of" know.

Some of the music is sung in Latin, some in English, and some in other languages. This one particular morning I heard music that seemed familiar to me. Not the melody but the words. The words were in another language yet they were execptionally familiar.

When the song was over the Priest gave the name of the music and group and mentioned that it was sung in Hebrew. I had already realized that some of the words being sung were "my" words...words that come from my heart and out of my mouth when I sing in tongues. (By the way, I'm always alone and normally in my car when I'm singing in tongues...and I have normally always had something really heavy or other wise touching on my mind or in my heart!)

When I sing in tongues the melody has always been Hebrew "sounding" to me...almost like a lament or wailing. This was the first time that I've ever known that at least a portion of my tongue lanuage is actually Hebrew. What a revelation! What a blessing!

I found this so interesting. I wonder if anyone else has ever had an experience like this. I absolutely do not speak another language at
all...so this was really something!

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?

I know what you mean about speaking in tongues. Unfortunately it is a controversial topic in the "church" today. Please, if anyone else post's here, let's keep our post's nice and friendly and if you don't agree with what's said here, Don't post, ok?

Anyway..yes I have sung quite a bit in my tongue, but I dont' know what language it is. I'd sure think it would be fun to find out someday. But maybe not till heaven, who knows?

Cool, Gerrie! If I could have chosen my language, I certainly would have chosen Hebrew!

Ya never know, Gerrie. I had a pastor who used to say, "Don't worry about it, it's not your business what you speak, but that you speak." (in tongues) So rock on, my sister!

How awesome. Hebrew, I'm not sure what mine prayer language is. But I guess it really doesn't matter.

Thanks everyone for your kind responses.

I totally agree that it doesn't matter at all what the language is that's being spoken. The important thing to me is that the heart knows the object of my song and the Lord knows the words that my heart yearns to be able to express. (Still...it was kind of a neat surprise to find out like that!)

In all things though...whether in English, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, etc...or in an unknown tongue..."May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto thee O Lord!"

This may be slightly off topic from what you guys are talking about, but I read Psalm 119 the other day. It is based on an acrostic of the Hebrew alphabet.

I always thought it would be incredibly cool to know Hebrew and hear it spoken in the original language.

Dangit! I had a link where there's actually an mp3 collection of some old rabbi reading the entire OT in Hebrew. It's beautiful...

I ripped it all onto a CD, and I can't find the link now. But it's great...

That is great. I've spoken in tongues before no idea what i was saying. but i will say you have to be really in tune with God to do this because often I get off a wave or two and can't lock in. but i did the other night when this young man was preaching and it felt great.

I really love speaking in tongues and wish everyone could exp it at least once.

Thanks Jaybee. I listened to some of it and agree that it is such a beautiful language. I've shared this web site with several friends and family members as well. I appreciate your sending it on to us.

Hi Grimsleygl,
Well it seems this is an older thread, but I found it really interesting because you are speaking about tongues and about Hebrew. I speak in tongues, but I do not speak in Hebrew.
However, a friend of mine found a cd with a lot of Jewish music of varying kinds. At first when he lent it to me, I did not listen to it for sometime. Then I started listening to it and wow, did I ever find it hitting the spot inside me! I have listened to this one cd on and off for a good three months now, and have found that different songs seem to become my favs for a while and then all of a sudden I'll shift to another one. And i can't get enough.

Today I was listening to one song where this lady sings and man does she wail and lament! I realize that perhaps in another life I was perhaps a Jew because does this stuff ever touch something inside. My wife thinks I'm nutz so I listen to it in the car alone and speak in tongues during or after. So that's why I'm responding to this Grimsleygl. It's close to home.

By the way, I would say one thing about tongues: speak it daily and don't wait for "feeling's" to use it. I realized that as I speak it, when I feel nothing, there is a real change that occurs me and in my praying. Don't know if you have heard of Jackie Pullinger, she has worked with drug addicts in Hong Kong for over 40 years, and she said tongues was the key to her ministry as she began to use this gift consistently. A few days ago, after speaking in tongues for years, that hit me. She is right, we should use it daily a certain amount and then watch what happens as you do this. There is definite spiritual power or building up released as we do this. I'm not waiting anymore. Bless you

Thanks for the response Waiter. I have no idea why I don't continue in my "prayer language" or in my singing in tongues. I need to really give this some serious thought. It is such a special thing and to not do it just doesn't make sense, does it? Hmm...well, thanks for the encouragement. I know I've needed that.

As far as the attraction that many have expressed towards the Hebrew language in general, either hearing the Bible read in Hebrew, or singing, etc., I suppose it makes sense that we would be strangly attracted to the language of our Lord and Savior...right?

Blessings!

Hi Grimsleygl,
I was speaking in the tongues a lot in the past week or so, and began to sing in tongues to songs I really like, following the song. As I was doing this intensely and a lot, I began to realize a lot of things, which the Lord was showing me I believe as I was speaking. One thing that came clear and definite was this: I must do this consistently daily. There is a building up of our spirits in God only knows what ways.
Here are some basic but wonderful things I feel the Lord has showed me about tongues:
It is the simple expression of our spirits unpremeditated unthought out. A baby utters seeming gibberish, not forming words, but is expressing freely, truly, honestly from it's little heart and there is meaning to the father and mother. We are the same before God. Tongues expresses the pent up things of our spirits truly to our Father. We need to daily release the expression of our spirits in these unformed unthought out unpremeditated speakings and we need not wait on feelings, for as we speak in tongues our feelings will be affected. We don't wait on feelings to pray or read the word of God.Tongues is to be the same. We do it as an act of will, and then as we see the benefit in the doing, we realize more and more the great value this tool has for us spiritually.
This one is amazing to me, but it came clear one time in speaking in tongues: tongues literally re-aligns our spirits as we get bent in different ways through our daily experiences and things affect us and weigh us and load us down and keep our hearts from fully looking to the Father in joy and worship and confidence. I can't explain it, it just came clear as a feeling in my gut and a knowing in my spirit once when I was speaking in tongues.
Tongues is also powerful against Satan. I have spoken in tongues and felt like I was conducting warfare.
Many times I have spoken in tongues recently and it felt like I was threshing or that my speaking in tongues was like I was cutting through stuff. I go with gut instinct of what I'm feeling and receiving as I speak in tongues because I believe interpretation is often what is coming to our minds and guts as we are speaking in tongues.
There is more, but these are powerful things, and I believe the Lord told me that if I use tongues, greater growth and understanding will occur, and I have found that when I speak in tongues for a period, and then pray, my praying is more confident, more direct, more coming from my gut and my heart, and my prayers feel and seem more real to me and more authentic as coming from my spirit rather than the sometimes drudgery of going thru quick sand.

Jackie Pullinger is a well known woman who went to Hong Kong in the 60's and there began first to speak in tongues. But then stopped for a year because she said "it didn't feel right". Then a year later, ran into a couple who told her to use it not based on whether she felt to or not, but because scripture says when we do i t edifies or build up our spirit. She began to do this daily and she said her life and ministry changed. People began to get saved and healed. Things really changed. God bless you
