Ever since I got this new computer built, I've noticed that my CPU temps skyrocket whenever I have Word running. When I'm working on my manuscript, which is 90xxx words, the temps hit as high as 60 degrees Centigrade. Contrast this to 45 degrees Centegrade when using OpenGL-based 3D games. I've asked around, nobody seems to know what's going on. Well, tonight I finally found the problem.

The background spell check on MS Word 2000 is the culprit. Apparently, the bigger the document, the more CPU time it tries to gobble up. In my case, that was a lot. If you've got a laptop, this kind of problem could really waste a battery. Anyway, Microsoft has a few articles in their knowledge base about this, but I didn't find any patches (I did find an update utility, but the stinkin' update file would take forever on this slow connection).

Anyway, just a tip--you can turn off background spell check in Tools>Options>Spelling & Grammar. Just uncheck it. Then, when you're ready to look for spelling errors, turn it back on and do your thing. I know it's not ideal, but if you're having the same trouble, it's the only fix I know of.

wgjones3,
___I ran into the same problem years back. I started to only edit one chapter at a time, and I build a frames-web layout for my book. It’s easier to navigate and load that way.

BTW great info there. :D

I'm interested in the frames layout. Did you have to convert your book over to html or did you keep it as a .doc file?

___If I remmember right, it will convert doc to html automaticly. It's really no big deal to me. Eather way I'm getting the work done and everything has to be printed out each time I send it to a publisher.

Oh! I see. Zinged through it too fast. Too busy getting into battle mode with the next crummy weather system. (North Dakota sounds really good.)

Suthern Orogen is nice... sept for the big-big-big fires that happen every now and then. The town I live in right now was almost bernt to the ground 2 years ago I think.

Oregon does sound pretty good. If I could live anywhere in the world (or at least have the means to try places out,) I'd like to live in Scotland. Beautiful. In America, the northwest would be good. But I'd probably move to southern Missouri. I did this 'survival camp' thing along the Black River once and I really liked the whole Ozark area.
