View Full Version : The Wheel of Time Series
Have any of you read the speculative fiction series by Robert Jordan? I just discovered him about two weeks ago and have been devouring the books (bought several at one time after having read Book One). His writing, in my opinion, is above excellent. I keep marking sentences, with the idea of going back to collect them to use for my own attempts, without using them word for word. I don't know how anyone can weave so many different subplots into one story--actually several stories, I guess. How did he come up with so MANY??

How far have you read? Your opinion might change. :(
I agree, I think Eye of the World is possibly the best start to a fantasy series I've ever read. It is extremely good. I also enjoyed the Great Hunt very much. After that, Jordan starts to go down hill and I can't even bring myself to read more because of all the friends I have who say that his detail gets ridiculously boring by books 5-9.
It's too bad that he started so well and didn't keep it up. But I did hear his most recent book brought back some of the action pace of the early books. Maybe I'll skip to that one. It remains to be seen what people will think of the final book when it comes out. (for those who don't know, Robert Jordan passed away not long ago, so someone else is writing his final book using his notes)
I'm on Book Four, The Shadow Rising. I tend to skip over detailed descriptions to get to the story. I don't think I'll read the final book if it's written by someone else, regardless of using Jordan's notes.

I'll be interested to know what you think of the later books. Keep us in the loop.

I read the first one, but that's as much as I could stand. I thought he was windy and cliched. His two-dimensional characters drove me mad. But, apparently, there's thousands of readers out their who disagree with me.

I think I read thre Prologue, and chptr 1 in the first book, then never continued past that - I had the book checked out fromt he library for three mnths. So it was just not holding my attn even to start with - maybe simply b/c I had to many other books I was also trying to read, who knows. Maybe I'll look at it again later, but prbly not, I too am reluctant to read a series that so many people have said went down hill rather rapidly. Too many bad experiences with other books / series that I had doubts about and proceeded to read anyway, and then couldda kicked myself for wasting my time. TOo many other good books out there I wantta read - not enough time to read them all, so why use time reding a poor series when I can try out a new author.
