I just receieved my second request for a partial on my first novel. Now I'm trying to decide if I should continue to send out queries. I'm getting conflicting advice. I've been told I should hold off on sending more out to see what response I get from these 2. On the other hand, I've been told I should keep sending queries because they say that it takes about 50 queries before you finally land an agent (I've only sent out 15).
Any advice is welcome.
Thank you,
Suzanne :O)

Most queries end up with a form rejection. The fact that two agents asked to see partials is a good sign. It's up to you whether you would like to send more queries or not provided neither agent has a policcy against simaltaneous submissions.

If these agents were my first choices, I would probably hold off for a month or two. But I wouldn't hold off sending queries longer than that.

Okay, this may seem like a dumb question, but I have wrestled with this and never really found a clear answer. How do you know when, and if you need an agent? Should you try to get [I]something[I] published on your own first, or should you just look for help with your very first attempt at submission? These are the reasons I have yet to submit anything!

There are very few publishing companies that will take unagented manuscripts. Also agents represent you when it comes to contracts. Basically, I just feel in a better position, since I'm not an expert in publishing, having someone to represent me.

Be sure you check out ALL agents on Editors and Preditors (http://anotherealm.com/prededitors/) before making any commitments.
