Years ago I found a very old hard back book called, The Sorrows of Satan, written in 1895 by Marie Corelli of England. I loaned my copy of the book to several people, and eventually lost track of it in the process.
I've just finished searching the web to see it it's available anywhere and I am excited to find that the book has made a comeback and is now in paperback . Wikipedia says that this is regarded to be one of the world's first best sellers.
It's about Satan who knocks on the door of a hungry writer who has just inherited a million dollars. Satan is disguised as a handsome, enterprising young man who promises to help Geoffery, the writer, gain power and fame.
Though much of the book escapes my memory since it's been over 30 years since I read it...several parts of the story has stayed with me all these years.
Have any of you read this book? If so...any comments you'd like to share?

As I remember, it is quite interesting. I think I'll order one of the new copies. This time I'll put my name in it somewhere. (One hates to do that on a very old copy!)
I hope you get to read it sometime. Would love to hear your comments. :)

I hope you do get to read it sometime Rachel...and Cymru too. I think you'll find it very interesting and "a good read" though horrible at the same time.
It's been so long ago since I read it but a couple things have stayed with me for many years...as happens so often with really good books, right?
From what I remember, it gives quite vivid glimpses of the horror of what unvailed sin might actually look like on a person who has has taken up with, and is entertaining Satan...even though it might be unaware.
I distinctly remember the shocking and terrifying image as the author described what Geoffery saw in a quick glance as he looked into the mirror one morning and saw his own face distorted with evil.
This was quite personal for me too...as I immedately recalled an unforgetable moment of my own when I woke up in the wee hours of the morning, still groggy from an alcohol induced sleep. I unexpectedly caught a quick glance of myself in the bathroom mirror, and it did not seem to be me at all! It seemed that someone else had taken up residency in my body. Someone very old and very evil. Quite a picture I tell ya!
So that's "one" of the reasons the book has stayed with me. It was, in some ways, a picture of my own life before Christ became my all and all.
There are other quite memorable things as well as I begin thinking back about the book. But as I said, it's been many years...at least 30-35 of them!

I imagine there are quite a few things Satan could tempt an aspiring writer with. I have had to send him packing a few times, myself. Elaine

Right Alice! And, one doesn't even have to be an aspiring young writer either...as was my case. Oh, what a bother! But...we know we must keep at it as far as sending Satan a packin'!
