OK, so the historian learns the author was shot down during a war. How do they know what German pilot did it? They usually didn't fly alone, they flew in squads, and unless everybody else was so bad that they didn't shoot down any of the enemy planes, how do they know it was the one guy?
Hmmmmmm?

"I saw this markings"
They had ways of tracking down who nailed who in a lot of cases. This story seems very truncated, but I imagine there are ways to figure it out, and that this is more or less accurate.
