I hear more and more about folks stockpiling. I go back and forth on the issue. Good idea? No? I think the first thing that comes to mind is that if you do you best not blab it around or folks will do a home invasion on you if things got bad.

Probably a decent idea, at least a few weeks worth.

I always try to keep extra food in the freezers in our house--meat and the like--and canned foods in the cabinets. And lots of pasta.

Personally I think it's a better idea to learn how to survive without stockpiling. But I do like to keep a bit extra just in case money is tight. Plus it is a bit cheaper to buy in bulk.

Anything you "stockpile" shouldn't be dependant upon electricity. It is my goal to get a couple of multi-fuel stoves, freeze-dried foods, medical supplies, some extra canned goods, etc. The stove and the freeze-dried foods would also be used whenI go out on photo campots (another goal of mine to be able to do).

As far as learning to survive, w/out stockpiling, I would also like to be better trained and prepared in that area as well. I'd really like to get out of the suburbs and live out in the country. When power went out, we still had wood stoves, though no electric generator. So I would want a generator (and fuel, safely, and securely stored - maybe cycle through using it for vehicles, whatever, so it doesn't turn bad), and/or I would want to learn how to use a wood stove to cook - cooking over a campfire just isn't the same, but would certainlhy do in a pinch.

Here is a link from another thread about preparing for winter storms. (http://travel.howstuffworks.com/10-ways-to-survive-a-snowstorm.htm)

the federal govt recommends that you keep at least a 3 day supply of water, plus other essential items (dried milk, canned food/dried food, etc). You can cycle these items so that nothing gets too outdated. Remember the 'victory' gardens?

Buy one of those 'worst case scenario books' and learn what to do under certain conditions. Hopefully won't have the need but ....

Living with just enough food in your cupboards isn't good. I mean what are you going to do if you can't get to the supermarket/grocery store.

We don't stockpile food, but we do have extra food. Especially if it is on special/sale. We had the power go off one day. (and we only have electric cookers) so we got out the gas stove from the shed and used that. now we also have a gas BBQ so we could use that.

i feel blessed that God has blessed us with being able to buy food and extras as well. It also is helpful to have a garden. During summer we dont' have to buy tomatoes of capsicums(peppers). And a few others vegetables. We also when we have extra bottle it. So we have a whole shelf full of bottled/pickles/preserves that we can use.
